  -one of the only video players that can play video playback files (.flv)

  -isn't too customizable

  -doesn't play any other type of file except for flv

  The whole point of Flash Video is that as a Flash developer you can create a player with any type of look and feel you desire. You need to know Flash in order to do this, and the Flash tool even offers a drag and drop component (the FLVPlayback component) to quickly deploy your own video player.

  Your comment suggests "media players" are proprietary products of those who created it, and with Flash this is only partially the case. You can design any Flash Video Player you desire with Flash, but you can only play .flv files (and quicktime too) at this point. Real Player can play Flash (5.0) content, the Quicktime Player can play Flash (7.0) content within their players through special relationship with Adobe, but author-created Flash players are not meant to load things like Windows Media. That is an "old-school" way of thinking for players.
