Competition in the world of all-in-one music-creation suites has grown considerably since Fruity Loops first started breaking beats. With a new name and a new interface, FL Studio is reestablishing its place as a full-featured and affordable audio-production program.

The photo-realistic mixing-board interface, littered with small, unlabeled icons and burdened with a confusing file browser, makes the learning curve steeper than it should be. Once you clear that hurdle, though, this enjoyable product will have you making music in no time. The Fruityslicer makes short work of chopping up breaks, and the simple step-based drum machine lets you create your own. You can bind FL Studio to other programs via VSTi and DXi plug-ins. A full selection of software instruments is included so you can start playing immediately. All the usual suspects are there, from vintage, buzzy, analog imitators to wacky sound effects and generic voice samples.

FL Studio offers a tremendous value for what you get. Comparable products cost nearly twice as much. FL Studio's quirky sound generators and interoperability make it a great addition to any studio. Be warned, though: several versions of FL Studio are available, so more features are included as the price goes up.

"Amazing software."

April 30, 2011  |  By og3beast

 |  Version: FL Studio 10.0

Pros

Still the best DAW available. Professional quality.

Cons

They removed block-style patterns and I wasn't ready to learn how to compose music without them.

"Very Beautiful Graphic Format and stable under load!"

April 19, 2011  |  By jettdogg

 |  Version: FL Studio 10.0

Pros

It has EVERY THING you could possibly need and if it does not, it is very easy
to import any VST written. Works very well with other software and plugins.

Cons

Not very user friendly, but worth the effort to learn.

Summary

I will most probably buy the full version if I can ever figure out the midi ins and
outs and how to import script. Very Wonderful software I don't think I can do
with it out at this point. Thank you very much for the opportunity to use this functional demo!

"Excellent as always. Highly recommended."

April 06, 2011  |  By RenegadeMind

 |  Version: FL Studio 10.0

Pros

It's all par for the course Fruity awesomeness. :)

Cons

None. There are no cons. If you own FL Studio already, it's a free upgrade.

Summary

If you are already using FL Studio, v10 is just more great stuff. Get it. Period.

If you aren't using FL Studio, it's absolutely worth checking out. It only gets better and v10 is no exception.

I saw in the installer and in the FL Studio forums that OpenCandy is in there. Some people voiced concerns or displeasure.

I've posted some analysis of the process here:

http://cynic.me/2011/04/03/opening-up-opencandy/

It's too long to post here though. It also includes other analysis materials.

Anyways, that walks through any concerns.

"Good update with unique UI changes"

April 06, 2011  |  By charles1763

 |  Version: FL Studio 10.0

Pros

Workflow changes feel fresh, and after some getting used to, are exciting and welcome additions. "Patcher" is a great new chainer tool.

Cons

Removal of pattern blocks may come as a shock for some longtime users, though they are technically still supported.

Summary

FL Studio 10 is a fine addition to an already strong DAW series. It would seem that the primary focus for this release was changes to the core software itself.

The work flow has been altered dramatically by finalizing the move away from pattern block arrangements. That being said, the 10.0 release does allow for legacy support of this classic interface. However, with a little bit of time and practice, these changes do feel like improvements that will ultimately allow for a more flexible and powerful UI. There have also been a number of significant updates to make the software work smoother and more efficiently.

However, because of the focus seemingly being primarily on updating the core software, Image-Line did not include as many new VST effects or synths as they have in the past, but the new "Patcher" is great, as are the two pitch manipulation tools to a degree.

Overall, FL Studio 10 is a fantastic DAW and I am eager to explore the new additions more fully.

"FL is back and it looks and feels better than ever."

March 30, 2011  |  By hybridhelix11

 |  Version: FL Studio 10.0

Pros

1. New design makes making music look cooler than it did before.
2. Features like group note stretching and skewing and the magic lasso add an incredible level of convenience.
3. More stuff than I have space to talk about.
4. Still has the FL feel.

Cons

1. Minor, subtle conveniences have been taken out but they weren't that big a deal to begin with.

Summary

The release of FL Studio 10 was the best news I've received all day--and I've been in the middle of receiving college acceptance to my top schools. They've kept the basic feel of FL Studio but really tweaked the little things to make it a much more convenient program to use. I'm thoroughly impressed and definitely going to be using FL a lot more.
