Next to antivirus protection, regular backups may be the single most important measure you should take to protect your PC, your data, and yourself, yet studies consistently show it's the preventative measure PC users neglect most. There is simply no excuse for not backing up your system, especially when you consider the following facts: (1) You have a lot of money invested in your hardware and software; (2) Your PC most likely contains files, records, and archives that are important to your life and well-being; (3) something is certain to go wrong; and (4) backups are easy, especially with excellent free backup utilities like FBackup around to do all the work for you. You can schedule regular backups, of course, but you can also choose full or partial backups, levels of compression, drive mirroring, backups of specific folders or files, and much more. It creates standard ZIP files that you can access with any compression utility.

FBackup is based on Backup4all, Softland's flagship product and a powerful backup solution. However, for most users, the freeware utility is more than enough. With a simple two-part interface and a wizard that explains each step, it's about as user friendly as backup utilities get. You can choose either an external device (recommended) or a network location to store your backup.

FBackup is free, and it's ready for Windows 7. It makes regular backups painless, and it produces high-quality backups that will help you recover your system quickly when, not if, something unpleasant occurs.

"Terribly unreliable"

March 19, 2011  |  By zeopix

 |  Version: FBackup 4.5.241

Pros

Nice, easy to use UI

Cons

Doesn't work

Summary

When I first installed it FBackup worked pretty well. However, every successive version seemed to have more and more glitches in it. The last backup I ran DID NOT include all the files it should have. I dumped this and went with cobian backup. That seems to be more reliable.

"Does what it's intended to do, and does it well."

March 14, 2011  |  By grosswh

 |  Version: FBackup 4.5.241

Pros

Allows mirror backup (straight file copy) so the files can be restored on any machine without worrying about corrupted headers, odd Zip format, or re-installing the backup program. Has a simple built-in scheduler. Clean code: no notices/interference.

Cons

It's not as fast as Acronis, but that uses custom formats that make it a challenge to restore on other machines/OS's without add-on's.

Summary

Fbackup also does full backups with Zip format, incremental backups, etc. But I wanted the mirror backup which many backup programs don't include. So it's exactly what I was looking for.

Updated on Mar 14, 2011

I neglected to mention that on a mirror backup, you can choose to delete files in the backup when you delete/move them on your hard drive. So instead of having to wipe out a backup or create a new one to get a true reflection of your current files, it does it on the fly. Great!

"Program not reliable"

March 10, 2011  |  By KNRover

 |  Version: FBackup 4.5.241

Pros

Relatively friendly interface. Saves backup files to zip format so don't need program to recover them.

Cons

Slow compared to others I evaluated. But worst "con" is that it apparently can't handle some large files, because on two occasions, it produced backups containing errors (non-usable) and PKZip could not repair them.

Summary

I evaluated FBackup for a small organization, and initially liked the interface and way it operated. The first backup I tried was fairly simple, only a few files. Worked perfectly, albeit considerably slower than what I'm used to with PKZip.

I zip about 1.3GB of working files, and PKZip takes about 2.5-3 min. to do it. To make an exact comparison, I created an FBackup list that was identical to the PKZip list I've used for years. Not only did it take 13 minutes, the file was corrupted and unusable. Thinking it must have been a fluke, ran it again. Same result.

Bottom line: I can't recommend a backup program that I can't trust.

Oooops. I have to eat crow. I just tried the identical backup using Corbian Boletus, and it, too, produced a corrupted file. I then looked more closely at the list of files, and I was backing up \Documents and Settings IN ITS ENTIRETY, which is a no-no because it contains all kinds of settings and other files that have nothing to do with my working files. I would, therefore, change my rating from one star to 4 stars. I still like Corbian better; it's more intrinsic, but FBackup is a good program, also.

"Very nice backup program"

March 06, 2011  |  By SnowWolfPCR

 |  Version: FBackup 4.5.241

Pros

Pretty quick to an external drive, allows mirror backups of a partitioned drive, gives a full log of the status and does not require you to upgrade to use these features.

Cons

None yet, mirror backed up 4 partitions to external drive under XP-SP3 and USB 2.0 with no issues.

Summary

Ran under XP-SP3 and will soon test under Win 7 Home Premium but the docs say it's W7 compatible so don't expect any issues.
Recommened download! Thanks to the authors of this program, a job well done!
Have not read the help so do not know how easy it would be to use for an average user. But if you're a techie, it's pretty straightforward.
