Editors' Review

Functional and useful, Evernote goes beyond its architecture and is also interesting. It's a true three-platform play: it works very well, and somewhat differently, on desktop computers, mobile phones, and over the Web. Evernote is a good note-taking application. If you have the Evernote application running on your camera phone, it will automatically upload your snapshots to the Evernote server, creating a useful archive of them. But the killer feature is that it also does OCR on your images so you can find them later by searching for text in them. Use this tool to snap pictures of products you see in stores and want to remember, to grab whiteboards in meetings, and to take pictures of people with name tags at conferences. It's one of those utilities that might just change your life.

Everything you do on your phone and on your computer gets synchronized to your Evernote account on the Web. Since it synchronizes as soon as you log on, and regularly thereafter, reinstalling the software or losing data because of a crash are nonfatal problems. Do note that the Web-based text editor isn't keystroke compatible with the PC-based editor. It makes switching between the two experiences confusing. The free version offers 40MB per month for uploading and unpredictable OCR performance, while $45 a year gets you a 500MB a month allowance, priority OCR, better security features, and support.

"Wouldn't be without it"

August 08, 2012  |  By dadanox

 |  Version: Evernote

I'm a computer tech and may fix a problem today, but need to lookup what I did 2 years from now. Also, questions from the boss about ongoing issues that span months. I have Emails from other employees, and all emails I send BCC'd to Evernote via mail filters automatically.

I save fixes, web pages, and Documents. I can even make a quick document with screenshots pasted in, then share the document quickly with an Evernote URL.

When I'm on a conference call, I pop open a new note for any jotting down I need to do.

You get a new allotment of space every month. I'm a paid subscriber and happy to be one.

If bulk sending email when first setting things up, be aware of an email limit (right now 250 per day for subscribers).

"The new release is a giant step backwards"

June 19, 2012  |  By tokuhisada

 |  Version: Evernote

Older versions were great with synching ability

Latest version will not cache or store documents, photos, etc on the android device but requires web connectivity. The alternative is to go with the paid version. For Kindle Fires with only WiFi, the local storage is needed.

Evernote did a good job of SCREWING the free user by taking away the local storage

"Lost my entire Note; not very user friendly(iPhone app)"

June 16, 2012  |  By coolrigs

 |  Version: Evernote

As many have stated: Auto upload and sync.
Various fonts and formats and indents
Embed audio and pictures

I lost my ENTIRE note and it synced it so I lost it EVERYWHERE. Scenario: I had a long note in edit mode and did not tap "Done" and switched apps . I went back to Evernote app after couple of days note was still open (perfect!) and I tapped "Done". It saved AND... the note was GONE... empty.. All gone.. except the title... and I saw it sync the very next second (I almost tried to reach in to make it stop... but there is no way to stop it)... it was gone from everywhere...

Bad design by Evernote ... not having considered all use cases.

Bottom line issues that I had been noting was it was not as user friendly as apps these days are:
- Too many taps to edit - While I am reading my note - I cannot tap in the middle of the screen to start editing there. I have tap on the icon and it takes me to the top!!
- Does not auto-save when you switch app. Have to tap on Done.
- And worst of all it lost the entire note (not just my edit) on reopening the app after a couple of days... unacceptable!

Evernote lost my entire valuable info in the note I took... not acceptable. I am now not sure what other corner cases the design team has missed... hence I am out of Evernote for losing my note .... don't want it happen again to my valuable information.

some more cons:
- Also, once you start recording audio (say... accidentally) - it does not allow to pause/cancel.
- Attachments (impages) show up in the middle of note and cannot be moved - there should be an attachment tab and all attachments should be viewable there (optionally)
- Hard to move the attachments around the note

2 Stars due to some pros, but it deserves a 1 for losing the note and not having auto-saving feature.

May consider if they can make the app more user friendly and ensure in no scenario they lose the information entered and perhaps provide one or more old versions rollback option locally or on the server.

Sorry for the long review... as you can tell... I can write long notes :) and anyone would hate to lose it entirely.
