Perhaps one of the best 2D shareware games to date on the Mac, Escape Velocity: Nova offers a huge universe to explore as well as plenty of missions to keep you busy. With an open-ended plotline, you call the shots as to how your game will progress. You can beef up your ship and hire fighter escorts if you fancy yourself the pirate type, or you can begin a career in trading with your fleet peacefully roaming the galaxy looking for great buys and running trade routes for credits.
The game doesn't end there, however. Several huge plotlines within the game take you to the edge of the universe or have you joining the Federation in their fight against the invading Aurorans. There are a plethora of spaceships to suit your fancy (once you've earned the money) and plenty of upgrades to customize your ultimate space cruiser. It's all up to you.
Escape Velocity's graphics may not be as flashy as some of the newer titles out there. But with a huge universe to explore, several plotlines, individual missions, upgradeable spacecraft, and much more, most gamers will find themselves registering for this title within days of downloading.
