    "Free, And It Works"

    April 17, 2007  |   By Brian_Watters

    Version: Eraser 5.7

    Pros

Free. This program has two uses.

    1. Shred a currently active file. This is effective and easy to use, and is OPTIONALLY integrated into you right click menu in your explorer folders.

    2. Permanently delete all files that have ALREADY been deleted by standard deletion methods. This is where this program shines. It's fairly easy to do (I recommend reading some help files/instructions first though to make sure you do it right). It overwrites the deleted files with jibberish files.

You would be amazed at how many of your old deleted files can be recovered (I was upset when I recovered a 400mb video I deleted long ago, even though I had completely filled up my hard drive to less than 400mb of free space since then. I didn't think that was possible? Eraser makes it practically impossible to recover OR view any deleted files.

Especially great program for cleaning your company computer if you have to return it to them. Dear my employer: please do not read this review, oops, too late!

    Cons

Slow slow slow! But I suppose that if you want it erased properly, it has to be this slow. I recommend letting it run overnight. If you just want to do a single pass, you could let it run over lunchtime.

"Does what it says on the tin"

    April 12, 2007  |   By sam_pablo_kuper

    Version: Eraser 5.7

    Pros

For me, the most important thing about a software product is that it does what it is supposed to do. Last weekend I decided to upgrade my hard drive and sell the old one. In order to avoid selling it with all my information on it, I downloaded and used eraser. First, I used it to erase the free space on the drive (which still contained remnants of files "deleted" by Windows), and then I used it to erase the files and folders which I hadn't "deleted" with Windows. I suppose, in retrospect, it might have been faster to "delete" all the files and folders with Windows first, and then just erase the whole drive. Alternatively, perhaps there is an "erase whole partition" option in Eraser that I missed. Either way, I wasn't in a hurry, so I just let Eraser run overnight both times, doing its thing.

It worked well, and I'm very happy with it.

    Cons

Newbies should note that Eraser does take a long time to wipe a disk, because it has to write to all the relevant areas several times to destroy your data. Say you wanted to perform a 7-pass erase of a full 120GB drive. That would mean writing 840GB of randomised data to the drive. That's a lot of data! So even in a modern computer with a fast drive connection, this will take a few hours.

Finally, the user interface isn't the simplest I've seen and might benefit from the addition of a wizard for people who haven't used drive or partition management software before. I still found it very usable. A few small improvements to the UI and I'd be giving this 5 stars. As it is, I'm giving it a 4-star rating, which denotes: "Despite a few minor flaws, this program is generally excellent. I recommend this download."

"Good, with a few minor problems."

    February 20, 2007  |   By capthavoc123

    Version: Eraser 5.7

    Pros

This is an excellent program. It went over my hard drive and erased previously deleted files to my satisfaction. The best program of it's kind that I have found to date. I recommend it for computer experts and computer novices alike.

    Cons

I recommend not running the complete scan too often. Every time I do, I have to uninstall and reinstall the program because it messes up the formatting of web pages in Firefox. Instead, use the "Erase Recycle Bin" function after deleting files. It accomplishes the same thing as a complete scan, but doesn't have the problem with Firefox or other web browsers. The support website is also a bit lacking in detailed information, but this is a very minor problem because the program is very user-friendly.

    "CAUTION!"

    February 20, 2007  |   By 88keys88please

    Version: Eraser 5.7

    Pros

It appears to have shredded most, but not all, of my deleted files...

    Cons

I used this product on two different computers with the same result, one of them being a brand new tricked-out system: It appeared to have deleted some fonts in my system. Install/Uninstall boxes had no text in them and the fonts in FireFox browsers were completely messed up. I had to do a system restore to get things back to normal.

    Version: Eraser 5.7

    Pros

I went to their website and downloaded the newer version 5.82, and had problems,it would not work and I'm running Windows Media Center. So I came here to CNET and installed version 5.6 ,and It worked ,but after I ran it ,I did have to go to My Cumputer ,Properties,System Restore.and shut System Restore off and reboot .Then I had to go back and turn System Restore back on.Because after I ran Eraser it added almost 2gigs of files to my hard Drive. So thats what The Eraser web site explains how to fix that problem.I will continue useing their products.

    Cons

If you have problems just go to their website.they tell you there, how to fix alot of the problems you might have useing Eraser.
