"I wouldn't be without this!"
Version: Eraser 5.7
Pros
I use this software to clean up old hard drives on used machines. It is absolutely indispensable. It's also great to REALLY delete your recycle bin files.
Cons
I don't much care for the background erasing feature. It seems to use up too much cpu while I'm working. On the other hand, I just run it occasionally on the blank space; works fairly fast when left alone.

"Clear interface, good erasing capabilities"
Version: Eraser 5.7
Pros
The set-up for this program went very quickly and smoothly. It has a simple, clearly designed interface that allows for one-time erasing operations as well as scheduled, repeating operations. The task interface allows you to specify an entire drive, a folder with subfolders, or individual files for the task to operate on.
Speed is also good. I gave up on trying to use Norton Utilities Wipe Info after it took almost an hour to securely write over only 1% of my 40GB hard drive. Using Eraser's pseudo-random byte generator, I was able to do a single pass on the same 40GB drive in 95 minutes. I'm in the process of running the DoD 3-pass erase, which is going at a slower pace, but still a heck of a lot faster than Norton.
The help files are well-written, including a useful glossary of terms, in case you don't know what a "cluster tip" is, etc. There's even a section that gives detailed theoretical background about secure deletion procedures, in case you're interested.
I can recommend this program without hesitation for anyone who wants a simple interface and easy, flexible procedures for secure deletion of data. By the way, at least one other review mentions "encryption" as a feature of this program. This is NOT an encryption program, so don't go looking for that in the menus.

"Froze PC; wiped out browser config"
Version: Eraser 5.7
Pros
Not much. I uninstalled it after 2-3 hours.
Cons
As a couple of other reviewers said, eraser caused my Vista PC to hang. I had to pull the power cord to recover, because I could not never get Task Manager to run.
Also, eraser wiped out my Maxthon browser configuration.
Annoying.
This software appears to be of early Beta quality, based on my experience and the experiences of others posting their experiences here.
Too bad.

"Got "Access to c:\Program Files\eraser\Default.ers denied" every time I rebooted"
Version: Eraser 5.7
Pros
Features seem good.
Cons
Within hours of installing eraser, I got the error message each time I did a shutdown or reboot:
"Access to c:\Program Files\eraser\Default.ers denied"
requiring me to have to click on a Windows dialog box in order to complete the shutdown.
Disappointing.

"Does the job!"
Version: Eraser 5.7
Pros
Easy to use. Lot of versatility
Cons
When using on the C: drive. I keep getting a "Full disk" message and that the program could not clean the unused disk space area. Not sure what that's all about.

"Not the greatest software. Let me explain why..."
Version: Eraser 5.7
Pros
- Easy to use
- Free (Can't argue with that!)
- Great protection (or so I'm told - see my "CONS" section for further info.
Cons
- GUI interface not all that friendly (fortnately it's not that hard to figure out)
- VERY slow.
- On my 300 GB external drive the software would CONSTANTLY produce an error message indicating something to the effect of the program having failed. I think the software has some sort of a glitch/limitation on how big a drive it can handle. After completing about 25% of cleaning my drive it would halt with the error message. Then when I'd resume the same action, it would start at 25% again (so it would appear it's picking up from where it left off before the application halted). But that raises the question...is it really picking up from where it last left off? Is this a compromise in the true level of security? Perhaps it's just a glitch and says 25% completed when in fact it's started back at 0%. It would be nice if the application gave me a message to indicate that despite halting earlier, the program did NOT discard the first 25% and would now resume from that point.
