This program scans and locates duplicate files on your computer. It's easy to use and navigate; however, we found its search capabilities too limited.
Duplicate File Remover's interface isn't flashy, but it is easy to use and navigate. Simply open the application and select which folder(s) on your computer that you want to search, and the search will begin. When the search is finished, a summary of all found duplicate files is displayed. From there, you have the option of deleting, copying, moving, or hard-linking the files. For our tests, we knew we had some duplicate files in our My Pictures folder, so we started there first. Our duplicate files had similar names, but not exactly the same name. We were disappointed to find that Duplicate File Remover only located files that had the exact same name. If there were an option for searching for files using keywords, this application would be much improved. The program will search for duplicate files that are not saved in the same folder, so if you have an idea of which folders on your computer contain duplicates, this is helpful.
The program has a Help file which can be accessed by pressing F1. You have 30 days to try Duplicate File Remover, which is plenty of time to learn its ins and outs. The trial version installs and uninstalls with no problems, but it does create a desktop shortcut without asking. Overall, we think that Duplicate File Remover is a useful application, but it would be even more useful with more robust search capabilities.
Duplicate File Remover is a powerful tool to locate file duplicates on your computer (dedupe). It scans the computer and lists duplicate files based on Byte for Byte Comparison, which ensures 100% accuracy. It can find duplicates of any files: text, binary, music, video or images. For multimedia files (MP3, OGG/Vorbis, WMA), the contents of the following tags can also be analyzed: "Artist", "Album", "Title" and "Comment". The file Summary property can also be searched: title, subject, category, and author. Duplicate files can be deleted, hard-linked, or moved. The list of duplicate files can be sorted, exported to an HTML report, and acted upon.
You may not realize how many duplicate files you have on your computer, after numerous downloads from the Internet, or scattered over your home or corporate network. Duplicate files are in most cases redundant and unnecessary, so keeping them is merely a waste of hard disk space. Your hard drives may be full of extra copies of documents, MP3s, photos and videos waiting to be removed. Duplicate File Remover will help you reclaim valuable disk space and improve data efficiency.
