Dropbox is a free and extremely easy-to-use tool for sharing files and syncing them between computers, and you can also use Dropbox to back up files and access them from other computers and devices (including from your iPad or iPhone, with dedicated apps for each of those devices).

Dropbox's interface is largely invisible, which is part of what makes this app so easy to use. When you install Dropbox on your Mac, you create a Dropbox folder. This is a local folder that lives on your Mac, but you can access the folder from other computers (Macs or PCs), or anywhere you have access to a Web browser. Even better, you can use this folder to share files with other people--either through a designated "Public" folder, or by setting up folders inside your Dropbox with shared access by multiple users that you choose (this solution can be particularly useful in work settings as a productivity tool, especially because Dropbox tracks older versions of files). You can also use Dropbox to back up your files online, although the biggest barriers to this are the size of your backups (you get 2GB free with Dropbox, or up to 100GB with a monthly fee) and the fact that backup files need to be located inside your Dropbox folder (there are some workarounds, though, for more technically savvy users). If you're already a Dropbox user, make sure you update to the most recent version, since Dropbox doesn't reliably do this on its own. Recent updates have added Growl-less notifications, the ability to pause syncing, and several stability fixes.

Dropbox gives you a lot of useful features for free, with a remarkably smooth interface and shallow learning curve. If you find yourself frequently transferring files between different people and computers by hand (either via e-mail or USB drives), Dropbox is a must download.

"Supremely easy to install and use. Wuick too"

November 14, 2010  |  By andrewjctodd

 |  Version: Dropbox 0.7.110

Pros

Does what it says on the tin. Easy to get started, creates the external back-up I'd been lacking and is easy to follow.

Cons

The help pages are in the land of the techie and intimidating to us "I just about know how its supposed to work folk". Simpler versions would be good.

"Simply the best cross-platform file sync utility."

October 06, 2010  |  By cnet.aaron

 |  Version: Dropbox 0.7.110

Pros

Super fast sync between computers. Never a crash or problem. Easy web access and sharing.

Cons

Not enough service tiers! I want more flexible pricing. Too expensive to store a large amount of data that's not being accessed.

Summary

2GB is a lot of space for your working documents. I stopped carrying a laptop around once this came out.

"A no brainer for collaboration"

September 13, 2010  |  By moore2772

 |  Version: Dropbox 0.7.110

Pros

near-instant updates, free offsite storage for important files, access to previous versions of files, ability to access from any computer, mobile interfaces, cross platform, great way to send and receive (or just view) large files. Great interface

Cons

Rarely, when a large number of files are uploaded at once, one or 2 may not contain data. When that happens, resend those files. Otherwise, no cons I can think of.

Summary

I use Dropbox for 2 businesses as well as for personal files. It's fast, easy to use, cross platform, and it just works- very simple to use once installed, even for computer-phobic people. It's also a nice touch that you get extra space when you invite other people- up to 10 GB for free if you invite enough. The 2 GB free starter account is adequate for most people, and is good for sending large files rather than emailing them. This is a simple cloud system that interfaces seamlessly with your computer(s). I think it's absolutely great.
