"Easily transfered my system to my new HD"

April 10, 2010  |  By blb7

 |  Version: DriveImage XML 2.13

Pros

After 5 minutes of installing DriveImage (the free version), it was performing a drive-to-drive copy. After a reboot, I was running windows 7 on my new HD.

Cons

Had to rely on the windows 7 install disk to fix boot issues. Would be nice if the tool's drive-to-drive imaging would include an option to fix the mbr.

Summary

I first tried windows 7 system image to transfer my system to my new larger 500 gb HD, but it just wouldn't work. Way to go Microsoft! Don't depend on Microsoft for a system image. Use a tool that actually works.

"Wouldn't restore my backup without a fight"

April 06, 2010  |  By sireebob

 |  Version: DriveImage XML 2.13

Pros

The backup only took 35 minutes for a 70GB-in-use drive, which isn't *too* long...
It's free.

Cons

"100%" backup progress does not mean done.
It wouldn't restore my drive without manual XML tweaking (maybe that's where the 'XML' comes from).
Nearly gave me a heart attack.

Summary

I was having trouble with my solid state drive which houses my Windows 7 installation, so I booted to XP on another drive in order to back it up with DriveImage XML (no problems there, other than the estimated time being meaningless for system drives which contain a lot of files/folders, since it takes ages to dump those to XML), ran a Sanitary Erase, rebooted, and attempted to restore my backup.

First off, it required that a partition exist on the drive so it could be overwritten (um, why?) and directed me to Disk Management. I re-initialized the drive and created an NTFS partition. I didn't expect to have to do this so I didn't write down sector size, etc. When I tried to restore, it failed, claiming "Target partition must be at least the size of the original source drive."

My drive didn't magically get smaller in 10 minutes, as far as I know, and even if it did, I wasn't using up all the space on the drive anyway.. Why couldn't it just tow the line on this one? I have a feeling it has something to do with the way the partition was created by Disk Management in XP versus the Windows 7 installer, a problem which would have been moot if DIXML created the partition for me. It seems to have enough info in its XML file...

Anyway, I figured I wouldn't lose any data if I edited the XML file to match the parameters of the new partition (the difference was negligible), and it began a restore. Took about 50 minutes.

The installation wasn't recognized and wouldn't boot, which I half-expected to happen considering I only backed up the partition and not the drive, but Startup Repair off of the Windows 7 installation disc fixed that.

Overall, I was successful. It would have been easier if I had access to Vista/7's system imaging utility, but since I was in XP, I didn't. So DIXML gets props for that. :)

"Stay away from free version"

February 08, 2010  |  By WSBorowicz

 |  Version: DriveImage XML 2.13

Pros

Performed backup easily

Cons

Recovery is a chore with free version.

Summary

The cost of the product drove me from trying the full version. Experimenting with the free version drove me from considering purchasing the product. The backup was simple, but the recovery was a nightmare.

"Great Tool - Saved me lots of time recovering systems"

January 28, 2010  |  By PJTNH

 |  Version: DriveImage XML 2.13

Pros

Makes an image of a running system drive. Can restore to a drive that is larger. Don't have to reinstall apps or OS we your system drive fails. Works with XP and Vista. Compresses backup image and only saves valid NTFS files.

Cons

If a drive has any CRC errors, it won't back it up. Had to use a western digital drive cloning tool to copy a 2.5" laptop drive. Tried chkdsk to remove CRC read errors but could get past the errors.

Summary

Powerful and free for home use.

December 03, 2009  |  By brucebabbitt

 |  Version: DriveImage XML 2.13

Pros

Does a nice job of making a partition image at no cost.

Cons

Mainly for techies -- must create your own boot disk. Free version only backs up to an equal or larger partition.

Summary

Makes an exact image of your hard drive that you can restore and boot quickly.
