"The Best for Freshwater Tank Screensavers"

    October 15, 2010  |   By ArgoForg

    Pros

    - Realistic Fish Motions and Activity
    - Ability to use custom backgrounds
    - Range of most features

    Cons

    - range of freshwater types available (no bettas, guppies, platies, catfish, algae eaters or freshwater shrimp)
    - most likely no expansions due out anytime soon

    Summary

For what it does, which is act as an eye-catching screen-saver, Dream Aquarium is beautiful, and works easily even within Windows 7.

DA offers some of the most realistic motions for freshwater fish around. The fish really do act like they would in an aquarium-- shoaling and schooling fish hang together, even when added separately, and solo fish stay to themselves. They react responsively to the small crab on the bottom that every so often tries to 'grab' fish that get too close, and once in a while they dart after one another. You can tell a lot of love and careful observation went into making each fish model.

There are a lot of features to play around with, including the frequency of feeding (and the fish most often respond realistically to the food, even opening their mouths to take in morsels); the option to view the aquarium widescreen, standard, or to zoom in and follow single fish around the tank; and the option to add your own backgrounds for your fish to swim around.

What may torque some people off is that there are no 'larger species'. You won't find any whales, dolphins, saltwater sharks or the like here. DA focuses solely on being a virtual *freshwater* tank, and while I'd be happier if there were more species of freshwater fish available, the ones that are there are so well done that as of yet I don't miss the others. I do hope that this software is eventually updated with new species, however.

If you're looking for a good aquarium screen saver that focuses on freshwater fish, Dream Aquarium fits the bill wonderfully.
