This download manager brings much more to the table than fast file transfers, but it definitely delivers those, too. Increased download speeds are Download Accelerator Plus's bread and butter, speeding up downloads by almost 200 percent in most cases and occasionally as high as 400 percent.

Besides splitting files into smaller pieces, it thrives on automatically seeking faster mirrors. It also can get a file simultaneously from several sites, which is useful if a particular site limits the download speed; it can resume downloads; and it can preview some media files while downloading. There's also a blacklist for sites that you never want to accept downloads from, and categorized folders and filters to keep your downloads organized. DAP rolls in a media buffer, too, that allegedly will prevent streaming-video hiccups. Ensuring that you're running the latest version of the Adobe Flash player won't hurt, either.

Two new features include a UI change that lets users choose a Firefox- or Internet Explorer-styled download window, and integration with DAP's publisher's video converter. Downloading and converting video on the fly is a pretty smart way to keep the program fresh. The program will prompt you at your first attempt if you don't have the converter installed and guide you through its installation. Frustratingly, the install process will weigh you down with a ton of toolbars, default switches, and e-mail recommendations that you must opt out of for a clean installation.

Although it's heavy with ads and promotions, DAP is still a good choice for adding some heat to your typical download recipe.

"Download? Yes Accelerator? Yes Plus? MIA"

September 28, 2010  |  By PJFTL

 |  Version: Download Accelerator Plus 9.5.0.2

Pros

Download speeds are on par with other Download Managers

Cons

Too invasive for my preferences, they want to include a lot of other software I didn't want, too many pop-ups about their other software they wanted to download Isaid "no" to.

Summary

I tested DAP's download speed on a couple of files of various sizes and found it to be pretty much in line with other Download Managers I have tested (I know the "P" in DAP stands for "Plus" but I didn't see it...Plus what?). While you can choose default folders, unless you want to lump them all into one folder (i.e. all software in a folder called "Software", all music into "My Music"), you need to do some extra finagling if you want to have any kind of organization to your downloads in the various categories like keep your music organized by artists or album or both, keep your Adobe software downloads separate from your Microsoft downloads or any other software you may download from CNET. When I install software I like to know exactly where it is and know the file I chose to be installed is what I expected. Let's face it, the files used to install products are not always the most descriptive but that is not necessarily the fault of the company...they only have so many characters to work with.

I can understand a company wanting to promote other products they have to offer (after all that is why they are in business...to make money) but one thing this software really excels at is the constant pop-ups marketing their other software I had chosen not to install that did not affect the functionality of DAP. I came home from work only to find a message about downloads I had done last night and which software of theirs would provide a function I didn't want. Ya' gotta' love it when you're in the middle of doing something else and you get one of those pop-ups that cause unwanted action because you are typing away and hit a key that executes the installation of software I didn't want.

But what really frosts my butt is when a software company goes in and hijacks certain settings on my machine without my express permission like making a piece of their software I didn't even know was included in the download the default search provider and change my default home page to their search screen that looks eerily like Google's only re-branded. I now have to question the company's ethics and wonder what else have they changed on me without my permission or knowledge. What information unbeknownst to me are they taking off my system and uploading it to their network? At this point, I don't feel I can trust this software and will uninstall it and see what else is out there for me to test.

My expectations may be too high when it comes to companies I deal with but when I am installing their software, I expect them to have enough respect for the American consumer and be told what changes they are going to make to my machine but only AFTER they ask my permission. Hijacking computer settings is how people can get into trouble since they don't know what was done until after the fact and for all I know the company could have created some other exposure on my system without my knowledge. It doesn't matter if the software installed is free or if it costs money...both of those are a decision a company makes and feels they can live with. Unfortunately, DAP didn't respect my ability to make an informed decision about what I wanted as my default search engine or my home page. They didn't have enough respect for the consumer to offer those up as choices I can make

Companies take heed...while development may cost you, employee benefits may cost you, and marketing may cost you, the last time I checked having ethics and respect for the American consumer are still free and takes no effort but not having them will also cost you.

I will admit that by having these expectations I may have set my standards too high but I don't like having to spend countless wasted hours trying to recover a system (or parts of it)...that costs me. I just have a problem with accepting mediocrity as being the new "gold standard of excellence".

Did the product work and accelerate my downloads? Yes. Did it let me easily configure how I wanted the downloads organized? Started to but dropped the ball. If they acted ethically would I continue with it? Not sure. Have I tested any download managers whose acceleration is comparable, is more flexible and has more features to offer? Yes. Will I adjust by lowering my standards and let any software company continue to hijack settings on my system or anything else they want? Sorry...can't go there. I have a great piece of software I downloaded from CNET that has impressed me quite a bit which I will use after submitting this review...it's called Revo Uninstaller. Now THAT is a decision I can live with.

"Extremely fast, plugs into Firefox, works with my proxy"

September 16, 2010  |  By zeropluslessthan

 |  Version: Download Accelerator Plus 9.5.0.2

Pros

DAP is excellent for a freeware product. A download that after 6 hours had got only halfway - and then failed - is now almost complete after only 2 hours using DAP. Furthermore, it works as a plugin, and it can be set up to work via a proxy server.

Cons

As the editorial review says, there are a few stages in which DAP asks you to install partner products or upgrade to the pay version. Fair is fair - they deserve to make a bit of money for such a good product.
