"An awesome source port."
Version: Doom Zdoom mod 63a
Plays Doom very smoothly
Can be played with classic bugs or not
Supports mouselook, jumping, crouching
Much more customisation with the likes of DECORATE and ACS
Online capabilities with Skulltag and ZDaemon
DECORATE and ACS can be confusing at times
Other than that, nothing! The above con can be worked around.
ZDoom is the best source port available for Doom, the classic shooter from 1993. I'm not going to explain everything about that, but I will take ZDoom and hand it to you on a silver plate - that's what it deserves.
An interesting feature available for ZDoom is a scripting language called DECORATE - does exactly what it says on the tin, makes custom decorations. However, 'decoration' is a broad term in ZDoom - it can mean anything from a pillar to a weapon, or a giant key to a tiny monster. You can even make a statue out of a monster graphic, change the colours, make it stiff and choose a position for it to stick to.
Another cool feature is another scripting language, called ACS (Action Code Script) originally made for Heretic and Hexen, and greatly expanded in ZDoom. Basically, with this language, you can make slopes, mirrors, moving 'PolyObjects' and deep water, to name a few things.
Plus, ZDoom allows you to play any game based on the Doom engine: this means Doom and Doom II, Final Doom, Heretic and Heretic II, Hexen and Hexen II, and Strife. There is also a vast library of custom content available to play from the Internet, all of which is compatible with ZDoom.
Overall, I'd say it's the best source port. So what are you waiting for? Download it!
