Dolphin Community Edition is Smalltalk development environment that is totally free for personal/educational use. You'll find that it is a complete IDE for either learning Smalltalk programming or for creating your own personal Windows-based applications. It has a great, slick, user interface that we've tried to make as easy to use as possible, thus complementing the dynamic nature you'd expect from a language such as Smalltalk.

Version: Dolphin Smalltalk X6 Community Edition 2006.6.02.3
"Powerful and fun software development tool"
Pros: Smalltalk, once you've got used to its unusual way of doing things, is the most powerful and most enjoyable tool I've used in over 20 years of professional programming. Dolphin Smalltalk is the slickest and most professional version of Smalltalk available. A hands down winner.
Cons: It's a crying shame that Dolphin is Windows only. Many other versions of Smalltalk are multi-platform. Even so, I think Dolphin comes out on top, because it's such a great development environment.

"Excellent High-Productivity Quality Smalltalk Product"
Pros: Good GUI Smalltalk programming system for commercial applications. Free version now available for private/educational use is a real bonus.

"Impressive, unmatched productivity"
Pros: The two thing I like the most is productivity and its community.
I have been project leading and programming in most languages during more than 15 years. My teams have never been more productive and my products had less errors than with Dolphin (I am now using the pro version).
The community support (newsgroup and other sources) is problem-focused and most helpful.
In other respects, Dolphin is easy to use, documented.
Its Smalltalk nature was a few years ago a con for me, but now I learned to love it and Dolphin has enough Windows integration tools so I don't worry about not using a mainstream language.
I guess productivity and product robustness have compensated all the previous concerns I and my clients had.
In my point of view, simplicity is king, and Dolphin is SIMPLE, yet most powerful.
Cons: This is not really Dolphin's fault but, in order to get the most out of it, one must be really opened to change its way of programming and see software. Otherwise, don't bother.
The only thing I miss is lack of WinCE support.

Pros: For the newcomer and pro, Dolphin is the most comprehensive and best Smalltalk solution to develop software on Microsoft Windows platforms. A genuine software masterpiece which encompasses more than 30 years of a mature technology such as Smalltalk. True Objects Technology, system reflexivity, dynamic binding, dynamic memory management, and support for today's mainstream technologies and methodologies such as Unit Testing, Code Refactoring, source code management, among others. Plus, the impressive and elegant coupling with the Windows�® operating system which gives the developer complete access to the APIs and other services provided by the OS. Definitely it's the developer's choice for today and tomorrow using Windows. When I develop software for Windows, I choose this tool.
