"Cannot rebuild Time Machine disks - Deal breaker"

October 12, 2014  |  By FixMaX

 |  Version: DiskWarrior 4.0

Pros

None. See below. It is FALSE what Alsoft claims at its web site:

Question. Can I rebuild the directory of a hard drive that contains a Time Machine backup?
Answer. Yes, you can use DiskWarrior 4.x to rebuild the directory of a hard drive that contains a Time Machine backup.

Repairs Time Machine backup disks
Time Machine relies on a new directory structure called a directory hard link. DiskWarrior 4 version 4.1 and later repairs damaged directory hard links and can rescue a lost Time Machine backup.

ALL THAT IS NOT TRUE. IT IS FALSE.

Cons

Cannot rebuild Time Machine disks - Deal breaker. Even with Mac Pro with 64 GB RAM.

Summary

Error - Not enough memory (Error code 2154). Culprit is NOT lack of memory at all. THAT IS FALSE. The problem is DiskWarrior 4.4 being 32-bit and NOT 64-bit. SHOCKING!!!

"Alsoft leaves DiskWarrior 4.0 purchasers stranded"

February 29, 2008  |  By nnager

 |  Version: DiskWarrior 4.0

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
On Oct. 26, 2007, long-time consumers and supporters of DiskWarrior received this promise at http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/support.html "An updated version of DiskWarrior that has complete Leopard compatibility will be released soon as a free download for existing owners of DiskWarrior 4 version 4.0. On Jan. 21, 2008, Alsoft announced on the above webpage that 4.1 had been released: but not to registered owners of 4.0. Instead: "Owners of DiskWarrior 4 version 4.0 will soon be able to download a free CD updater." Sadly, as of Feb. 29, DiskWarrior 4.0 registered owners were still stranded. For discussion of the issue, see this MacOSXHints forum discussion: http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=85356

"Big Fish, Small Pond"

October 09, 2007  |  By Ken Tanaka

 |  Version: DiskWarrior 4.0

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Disk Warrior (DW) has been THE disk repair utility in the Mac world for a long time with very little real competition.

This does not automatically make it wonderful. Far from it. When it works it's a wonderful lifesaver. But it's been my experience that DW is able to fix real problems only 65% - 70%. The chances are strong that if you have truly knotty logical/directory trouble DW will choke, issue a meaningless message (ex: "Unable to continue due to error condition 14962a1. Click to continue.") and drop you on the curb. In some of these cases you may be able use the Mac OX Disk Utility to repair some of the trouble. But as often as not you'll spend much less time simply copying the damn disk to another disk, reformatting it, and then reloading it.

The boys that write utilities like DW are an odd lot, with strange perspectives on meaningful documentation and user messaging. DW is Exhibit A for this observation.

In summary, I'm glad I have DW but it sure is ripe for being extincted by a better-written disk utility. Wouldn't it be nice if Apple included such a product with Leopard?

"DiskWarrior is still the ONE AND ONLY no matter..."

Summary

...what here others say !
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
c'mon guys are you eventually morons or what ? ALSOFTS DiskWarrior is still the one and only tool which can save you in situations where NOBODY else's can. Just today it saved my butt again - an Xserve with a non mountable XRAID Volume - headers dead - which means major catastrophe for this client ! Diskutil says it "successfully repaired" the problem - which wasn't the case at all - RaidAdmin tries for ages and cannot fix it and then guess what - DiskWarrior 4.0 rebuild the XRAID puppy in a couple of minutes - voila - Done !
This is what DW is really all about ! (remark to You guys whining... sure You will need a newer BootImage if you buy the latest Mac - every Software Package does - but then just create one for yourself. Or even better install a bootable MacOSX System onto an external FireWire Drive - and install DW on it - this has the advantage of raw speed and is a really convenient way to fix your every disk problem, all right :-)

"Error 2163... cannot replace disk?"

April 22, 2007  |  By gryphonent

 |  Version: DiskWarrior 4.0

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Disk Warrior is great... but keep your fingers crossed that it works properly. DW4 has some quirky bugs that remain unfixed. As to when they will be fixed? Well, the developer didn't even bother - for almost 18 months! - fixing DW3 and leaving it to the Mac community to come up with a solution (you had to rename a sound file in DW3 if I remember correctly). Then DW4 came out... and with it a new problem.

I get often error 2163 whereas a duplicate disk cannot be put away. This happens when the "replace" button in the report is not clickable, leaving only the option to press "cancel." Great product, truly bad support.

"c'mon guy - this product rocks"

March 02, 2007  |  By mfix--2008

 |  Version: DiskWarrior 4.0

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
c'mon guys whats wrong with You - complaining about having to update your boot CD if you buy a new Mac... thats not ALSOFT's fault if Apple introduces new kit which requires a new OSX Release (and by the way you can burn your own if you're halfway clever) Anyway DiskWarrior is simply the BEST TOOL second to NONE. It does it's job admirably well since 20 years. Keep in mind that this is a small company which does not have a huge support departement for all your calls - but imagine how the Mac-World would be without it... I don't even dare... Thanx to Rusty Little & the Team for providing us with this excellent lifesaver :-)

"Works Great"

January 23, 2007  |  By rjtiedeman

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Have been a long time Diskwarrior user and version 4 works just fine. I have only had one major problem with an external drive which was repaired by e-mailing back and forth to Alsoft's expert tech support. Diskwarrior saved the day and the hard drive and information was saved. I use DW to run after installing system updates and monthly drive checkups. It has kept my Mac G5 running smoothly. I own other similar utilities but this is the first choice, The only negative I can report is the time it takes the CD to start-up my Mac.

"No problems"

January 19, 2007  |  By Franklin M

 |  Version: DiskWarrior 4.0

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Finally, in December I received DW 4.0 after waiting since I received my 2.0 GHz MacBook Pro.
Althought I had run Apple's Disk Utilities and repaired minor problems, I really didn't feel right until I received DW 4.0.
On first running it, it took about 5 minutes to boot, which is longer than DW 3.0.3 took to boot. However, on running it, it ran considerably faster than 3.0.3.
It found critical errors in the volume information, which it corrected by replacing the directory. Now, the MBP runs faster.
I can now sleep better at night knowing that I now have the one "must have" Mac utility.
