DiskTune is a simple, free disk defragmentation and optimization utility from DIY Datarecovery. It's a fast, on-demand tool built upon the Windows defrag API, so it's safe but thorough. But DiskTune is no mere clone; its VSS safe-mode minimizes the tool's interaction with stored shadow copies, and its thermal monitor detects when your hard drive gets too hot and shuts down the defragmentation process. It can defragment FAT, FAT32, and NTFS volumes, so it works with a wide range of disks, too.

DiskTune's installer lets you include the program on context menus in Windows. We selected this option, which let us access DiskTune's defragmentation and optimization features simply by right-clicking a disk or directory. DiskTune has a small main interface that minimizes to the system tray. Controls are simple: a menu bar with Drive, Stop, Analyze, Defrag, Optimize, Compact, and Exit above a color-coded bit map. DiskTune lets you group processes together and create desktop shortcuts for fast, regular maintenance. We chose a drive and clicked Analyze. DiskTune quickly displayed its data in tabular and graphic form and displayed whether it was a candidate for defragging or optimizing. We tried both as well as the disk-compacting tool. DiskTune performed well, with no unfamiliar twists, which we expected since it's built upon the reliable Windows utility. While DiskTune doesn't have a scheduling feature, its desktop shortcuts make scheduling regular maintenance tasks a breeze.

As always, we recommend against defragmenting or optimizing SSDs, which store data very differently from hard drives and don't need to be defragmented (it can actually shorten SSDs' lives). But for your regular hard drives and other FAT, FAT 32, or NTFS volumes, DiskTune can help you keep them slim, fast, and ready for more data.
