"A powerful Amiga program, now on PC."

July 28, 2002

 |  Version: Directory Opus 6.2

Summary

Okay, now this is a good replacement to programs like ACDSee. Its got tons of features, and literally made my life so much easier. Plus, I was a big fan of DOpus back in the Amiga days. Always loved the multi windows/frames feature.

"Beware!!!"

November 16, 2005  |  By bevans123

 |  Version: Directory Opus 6.2

Pros

Yes, a little better than other file managers. But, the Free Commander is free, and almost as good. You have the option of letting Directory Opus take over all the functions of Windows Explorer.exe, and therefor removing all the problems, particularly in Windows 98.

Cons

The version I tried, 8.2, could not be uninstalled. Because I chose to replace Explorer.exe with it, I couldn't even erase it. If you try it out, you will have to keep it, or you better have a backup of your Windows directory. It places itself in no less than 20 locations in the registry, making a manual cleanup a nightmare.

"Excellent!"

May 25, 2005  |  By computer_genius

 |  Version: Directory Opus 6.2

Pros

It ranks the same as ExplorerPlus. There is a new version (v8), and it is excellent. It is very feature rich, and very easy to use. I don't really get the people who say that this baby is hard to use. No, it's really quite simple. It's the best! Like ExplorerPlus. ExplorerPlus has more features, yes; but Directory Opus is easier to use. I bought it. Along with ExplorerPlus. Get it now!

Cons

It slows your PC if you have 256MB of RAM only running lots of programs. But not 100MB. Not even close. And it is pretty expensive. Compared to ExplorerPlus which is just $40. BTW DOpus is now $65. But still, gorgeous apps are really worth a price.

"potentially good; bad bugs; snide support"

November 07, 2004

 |  Version: Directory Opus 6.2

Summary

Program consumes 300mb of memory and 99% of the cpu consistently. I sent a screenshot of my task manager to support and was met with a reply telling me only to "throw away" my "silly anti-spyware software". I wasn't running any.

Thousands of files hundreds of subfolders to poor over. This was exactly the tool I needed to dig through it all by date ranges.

"...the Hercules of file managers"

June 07, 2004

 |  Version: Directory Opus 6.2

Summary

For years I thought Power Desk Pro v.4 and its successor v.5 were the best file manager/windows explorer replacements a person could use. ExplorerPlus v.6.2, a more advance version of Power Desk Pro, followed, and I thought it too was super. Now I come across Directory Opus v. 6.2.5.13 and the bar is raised again. ExplorerPlus is a very nice piece of software and does have some things that Directory Opus lacks, most importantly it doesn't need any external viewers or third party programs to view any file type. Directory Opus, on the other hand, uses a viewer plug-in system that lets third party developers write plug-ins that extend the file viewing capacity. One such plug-in utilizes the OutsideIn viewer technology from Stellent, Inc. This is the same viewer that is in Powerdesk Pro and Quick View Plus, so if either is installed on your system the pdqvp.dll plug-in can access them, letting you view the 200+ file formats supported by this technology. While ExplorerPlus has some conveniences, the speed, integration, looks, extensive feature set, extreme ability to customize, and overall quality feel of the software make a very strong argument in favor of Directory Opus. The program can be easily used by beginners who utilize few of the features, however those who want the full benefits of Directory Opus must commit themselves to reading the help files.....all 153 pages. While the print is small and there are very few illustrations the help files are well written. As other reviewers have stated, it is true that the learning curve for this program's complete feature set is VERY STEEP and should be avoided by all but the most committed, however those who make the effort will be rewarded with unprecedented power and control at their fingertips. At $60 some people will say that the learning curve isn't the only thing that's steep, while others will retort that you get what you pay for. You decide. Some things can be debated but one thing that is definately true is that once you get the feel for Directory Opus you will never go back to Windows Explorer. It would be the computer equivilent of going back to the stone age.

"Much too difficult to use"

May 26, 2004  |  By Novatix

 |  Version: Directory Opus 6.2

Summary

While it seems to have a great many features, trying to figure out exactly how to access them is sometimes daunting. It seems you have to be a skilled programmer in order to fully use this program. Definitely not for novices...

"This is the best I could find"

May 07, 2004

 |  Version: Directory Opus 6.2

Summary

It's a very functional, easy to use, stable and fast program, wich replaces the explorer functions by integrating into windows. It can handle zip files, but for other compression methods it uses an external prog. A program like ExplorerPlus can handle that by itself, but uses 42 MB of HD space (makes it slow at start up). I prefer an external so I always can use the newest programs for that. Also explorerPlus dus not really integrate. Directory Opus is easier to customize and more customizable than ExplorerPlus. It also automatically calculates the directory size (very handy). A funtion I couldn't find in ExplorerPlus (it's not there, or it's too hard to find). And another personal thing: Directory opus looks good while ExplorerPlus uses disguisting colors. The only minus is that Directoy Opus is more espenseive to buy. But who cares!

"It's not the best"

February 12, 2004

 |  Version: Directory Opus 6.2

Summary

Directory Opus is a good program. It is clearly superior to Explorer. However, it is not the best file manager available. ExplorerPlus (also available from download.com) is clearly superior in several ways. For starters, ExplorerPlus can view basically any type of file (graphics, audio, office etc) without the need to load an external program. Directory Opus cannot. It is also considerably more customizable that Directory Opus. My favourite function of ExplorerPlus which DirectoryOpus lacks is its ability to treat all archives as folders. This allows files to be added to, or extracted from ANY type of archive by simple mouse dragging. Also, Directory Opus is considerably more expensive than ExplorerPlus. Quite frankly, I can't understand why anyone would choose this product over a better and cheaper product. Oh well, people still buy Intel CPUs don't they.

"Something that can truly be called an Explorer Replacement"

January 22, 2004

 |  Version: Directory Opus 6.2

Summary

Fantastic product. It comes along just as WinXP started to really bug me with it's automatic "intelligent" folder customizations. The concept of a "source" and "destination" lister is very good. The image viewer is effective and well integrated. My only wish is that it does Thumbnail caching in a central database a la ACDSee / Compupic. That would really make it a complete File / Image management solution.
