"Simple, but for some tasks, an excellent design"

    December 30, 2011  |   By Barzillai

    Version: Digital Catholic Bible 1.3

    Pros

The 1.3 version I downloaded has two English translations, the Douay-Rheims and the Christian Community Bible. It also has a short Help file.

I liked the simple (after I figured out how to set it up) side-by-side comparison of the Latin Vulgate to English. The Digital Catholic Bible's design for this side-by-side comparison is excellent. Very easy to read and fast as I moved around checking on passages.

Tabs allow many different books, different comparisons, etc. to be just a click away. No tabs are saved on exit, however.

Favorites are easy to set and can be organized in groups. Side-by-side comparisons are not saved on exit, but other references are -- like bookmarks.

Search is rather powerful, allowing: { "stirred up" -king } just as in an Internet browser.

DCB worked fast on a Windows 7 64 Dell computer with Intel solid state drive and 1.73 gigahertz Intel Core i7 Q 820 processor.

    Cons

Other free Bible applications are more powerful. Look elsewhere for a more comprehensive full-featured Bible application. The Digital Catholic Bible is on the skimpy side of the robust scale.

    Summary

Not as a summary but an aside, there may be an easier way to set up the comparisons, but the first one I found that worked the way I liked (Latin left English right) is:

SELECT VERSION (then select one of the two English Bibles) > NEW COMPARISON > (then select the Latin Vulgate) > BOOK (then select the book and chapter, etc).

I will use Digital Catholic Bible only for Latin-English word study, but I will be glad I have the application on my computer.

    "Good reference program"

    September 25, 2011  |   By dynodeanmccabe

    Version: Digital Catholic Bible 1.3

    Pros

All sorts of ways to look up and just read the bible verse by verse. Great chapter layouts.

    Cons

A little slow in some areas. Doesn't default right away where you want it. But as a good cafeteria catholic, I can let this shortcoming slide.

"Add more Catholic Versions plus the Indonesian version."

    December 30, 2010  |   By Judewang

    Version: Digital Catholic Bible 1.3

    Pros

The program is light on my computer and it's faster to open than most bible softwares. Serves well for quick references and daily reading program.

    Cons

Adding The Jerusalem Bible, NRSV and NAB is a bonus. Indonesian translations Lembaga Alkitab Indonesia would be an added advantage for the Indo-Malay Catholics.

    Summary

I also noice that this program is so far, one of the few that offers digital Catholic versions. It has the potential to grow with the addition of Catholic Versions in English and in other languages. I stay in a region with many Catholics who speak Malay and Indonesian and have used Bibleworks but the Indonesia version does include the Deuterocanonical books. My continued search led me to a useful site @ Alkitab Electronik (http://www.alkitab.or.id/dmedia/copyright.htm.) which provides both the New Indonesian Translations and the Deuterocanonical books. This will help many Malay-Indonesian speaking Catholics in this region.
The search features for DCB is commendable but much can be done to improve it. It would also be more desirable to provide addition features for customization in the meaning that readers could also add their own footnotes with linkable scriptural passages pertinent to that version consulted, for example the footnotes and side references that are found in the hard copy of the Jerusalem Bible. This is helpful especially for those who embark in a more serious scrutiny of the Bible.
Overall this program is well worth the effort and it has the potential to grow into one of the best Catholic Bible Software. Keep up with the good work to make it even better.

"Has its shorcomings but otherwise very helpful"

    December 8, 2010  |   By almunday

    Version: Digital Catholic Bible 1.3

    Pros

It provides the Christian Community Bible version as well as the Douai. Most helpful where some Bible softwares discriminate against Roman Catholic versions and the CCB is not otherwise available electronically.
    Works with Linux using WINE.

    Cons

It does not include the Jerusalem Bible or New American Bible translations as authorised in some countries.
Would be helpful to have an easy way of only opting to only having one's own Bible language available so as to save space.

    Summary

Works very well and is a step in the right direction towards providing for RC users and I like it very much. I find its usability as good as other Bible softwares and it is without the price tags that sometimes come with being able to use some currently used versions of the Bible. This serves the purpose of making the Bible more available in modern translations very well.
I dare say that optional Greek and Hebrew Bible version add-on modules would be helpful. Inclusion of the additional Bible texts accepted by Eastern Orthodox Christians would as well, (with explanations as to their status to RC's). Similarly the RSV translaton in line with the RSV (Catholic Version) and RSV - Common Bible Edition, which included the Orthodox Bible portions. Inclusion of the Knox translation would also be potentially helpful, including for study purposes.
I am pleased to see that a Mobile Java version of this software is now available from http://www.digitalcatholicbible.com/download.htm if not here.
Do not allow the drawbacks of the DCB put you off. It is well worth installing and using. It may not have some of the bells and whistles of some other Bible softwares but it is very useful and easy to use

"It's the first software supporting catholic canone."

    December 7, 2009  |   By erikarlo

    Version: Digital Catholic Bible 1.3

    Pros

Made on catholic canone; easy to use; the interface is quite good to view; it runs under linux with Wine without any problem.

    Cons

It's not open source and it has no native linux version. The xml files with biblical text are strange, so it's very difficult to add other biblical texts. The search function sometimes has some difficult and it's not very careful.

    Summary

I think that this software is the first that try to make available the catholic canone in different languages. But Xiphos, Bibletime, La Parola or The Word are more efficient and agreable. I don't understand the reason why this product is not open but only freeware: why there's not a linx/mac version? The xml files including the biblical text are formatted in a strange way: in my opinion, it was better to use the xml format made by OpenOffice; in this way, everyone could make a Bible version for his personal use...
