"Disappointed"

September 09, 2003 | By davidc

| Version: Deskfinity 1.0B1

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I have been a registered user of VirtualDesktops since its beta release. It is an excellent program. The capability to define and turn on/off sets of icons would fit nicely into VD's feature set and preferences. This would allow us to define -- on a desktop by desktop basis -- which icon set would be displayed.

I'm not a programmer, so I'm only speculating when I say that it seems that CodeTek could have integrated Deskfinity's capabilities into VirtualDesktop rather than making another standalone product.

The usefulness of this product is great, but I would urge CodeTek to either build these same features into VD (and even charge existing VD owners a fair upgrade price), or leave Deskfinity as a standalone product but give current VD owners a discount. If not, I'm sure that CodeTek will see a much smaller following from current VD owners than they had hoped for.

"Better late than never"

My previous review was posted about a half hour after I called the developer (toll free, thank you) and complained about the lack of warning. Between that call and posting my review, they posted the comment just before this one. Shows good responsiveness and responsibility, which has always been my impression of their customer service. So in fairness, I need to upgrade my review some. Thanks.

"Forewarned is forearmed"

Summary

Great idea, but very much not ready to use (for me, anyway). I agree, by the way, that this should be part of CodeTek Virtual Desktop, not a separate app.

Here's two aspects of the beta version that are totally unacceptable:

1. The View settings are not user-accessible, so that no matter how you move things around on a particular desktop, DeskFinity, in it's infinite wisdom, will re-arrange your desktop the next time you switch back to it, snapping everything to grid AND organizing it in no discernable order (doesn't seem to be alphabetical) completely shuffling everything that was carefully organized manually.

2. There is currently no way to move files and folders from one desktop to another! So if I wanted to take 10 of the 50 items on my default desktop to one I named "Project A" I would have to, while in the Project A desktop, locate all 10 of the items on my hard drive and create aliases to them on the Project A desktop. Arggggghhhhh!!!!

Save the de-install instructions. You're likely to want them. I will come back when this is out of Beta and read the comments here before putting this puppy back in control of my desktop(s).

Five stars for idea, one star for publicly publishing a beta before these two major flaws were under some control. Minus ten stars for NOT WARNING the public that these two flaws were KNOWN and what would happen as a result, making it a real hassle for anyone trying it out on a desktop full of projects. I installed it, and spent twenty minutes re-arranging my default desktop back to what it had been, then re-arranged it a second time after the rearrangement didn't stick. I'm about to do it one more time after the de-install. Grrrrrr!

CodeTek Virtual Desktop is a great application. Fix the flaws in DeskFinity, combine it with CTVD, charge a LITTLE more money for the added utility, and I'll probably come back and give it 4 or 5 stars.

"Cool tool"

Summary

As a long time user of Dock Extender and Virtual Desktop from Codetek, I never thought things could get any better. The productivity enhancements that these tools gave me by either allowing me to nest applications, folders and files away in the dock, coupled with application specific work spaces makes life so much more structured.

Deskfinity takes the desktop to the next level.

How many times have you had a desktop full of your project work, and had to tidy away all the work files just to switch projects? With Deskfinity you can now have a desktop for a specific project, and rapidly switch to another project or an empty desktop.

I now have desktops specifically set up for projects with their starting point being aliases to their working folders.

Well done Codetek on another fine example of thinking about how we work on our computers.
