"Installer made invasive & unwanted system changes"
Version: Data Sweeper Pro 2.2
Pros
Don't know - I never got it to work correctly. I gave it two stars only on an assumption that it would have worked OK if I left all the system changes alone.
Cons
I don't find the interface particularly attractive or intuitive. Even worse, installer makes unauthorized and unwanted system changes. Then when I uninstalled components that looked extra, the shredder wouldn't work.
Summary
I didn't find the interface particularly attractive. I would have preferred just the standard Windows GUI. There was no explanation for "Keep current file size" option - what would happen if I turned that off (bigger or smaller)? Also, why would I NOT delete after overwriting? Worse, there was NO help at all in "Help" - just a version number an a link to their web page full of more apps to buy.
But my real grievance has to do with the installer making invasive and unwanted changes to my system. When I installed on a work computer, it hyjacked my IE7 home page, installed a toolbar and some other "Browser Helper Object", turned off my popup blocker, then threw me to "www.bestsecuritytips.com" with a pop-up leading me to install yet more junk. The home page hyjack corrupted my IE7 settings so that I could no longer use our intranet-based applications that my job depends on. I had to get help from co-workers to recover my settings IE7 before my IS group got involved!
I disabled the Add-Ons associated with the new toolbar, then used "Add or Remove Programs" to uninstall the component of the same name as the add-on. At that point, when I tried to use the shredder, it wouldn't work.
The effects of the installer are so invasive and troublesome, it's equivalent to a virus. It should be pulled from CNET!
Furthermore, I suspect "www.bestsecuritytips.com" are very active in promoting themselves, and whoever gave this app a positive review was from them.
