    "Simple, Small & Fast, Easy."

    June 9, 2008  |   By ParadiseJack.com

    Version: Dark Room 0.8b

    Pros

Alright, Now it is cool.. Complete darkness and easy to work with. This kinda notepad is actually great for those people, like me, who likes quiet and un-distracted environment. This notepad program is called Darkroom. Yep, indeed it's dark in the background, and it gives me the feeling of a darken room. Easy to concentrate and focus on the words.

    Cons

None at all. There's nothing no good about this program. If something too distinct is gonna be added to it, it's gonna defeats the whole purpose. Good Job!

    "Not the usual word processor"

    May 3, 2008  |   By gcasanova

    Version: Dark Room 0.8b

    Pros

Its different and hasn't all those features that distract you from, especially, creative writing.

Its for writing, not formatting, macros, embedding tables or pictures... its simply for writing

    Cons

Some necessary features have to be done through shortcuts and so you do have to learn some tricks.

"Solid stuff for serious work. No BS sofware."

    March 5, 2008  |   By Ferdi-66

    Version: Dark Room 0.8b

    Pros

This program is precious. A clean, stable & calm canvas in which real work can be done.

It is a shame that people who obviously didn't even take the time to test the programs decently should waste their time here letting out their superficial frustrations.

If you don't write long hours, if you don't like to concentrate, if the computer is just a X-mas toy for you, forget Dark Room.

But if you find pleasure in words, and if you like to hear (& watch) yourself think, Dark Room is an efficient & solid tool for you.

The default mode is a black fullscreen. If you want to reduce it and see the basic dropdown menus, just click Esc: if then you want to use the fullscreen with the basic menus all the time, just click the maximize icon on the window (instead of Esc, for the default clean black again).

In Preferences, you can check "Autosave", and the program will keep updating the simple text file it produces on the destination you chose.

The Dark Room site has some useful information. Windows Vista doesn't seem to allow the option "Open With Dark Room" in the context menu, but that's minimal, and nothing that time (and one simple Vista update) can't solve. I just love the four little up&down green arrows on the deep black screen before I start. Thanks a lot, Dark Room Team!

"How to save as and open different formats, Print files, and other settings"

    February 10, 2008  |   By bpike7

    Version: Dark Room 0.8b

    Pros

If you would like to save the file you wrote as a different format (for whatever reason you have), type the name of the file first then add the extension.

Example. If you wanted to save "shopping list" as a word doc you would type "shopping list.doc" (no quotation marks).

Although I would not recommend it (as there is no spell check) you cant print from Darkroom. Just press Ctrl+P.

For other settings right click and press preferences.

    Cons

    No spell check =(

    "Back to 1983"

    February 10, 2008  |   By vmazelis

    Version: Dark Room 0.8b

    Pros

This little novelty program takes you back to old times of DOS and pre-DOS word processing.

    Cons

Can not be considered as a real word processor. While you can change fonts and their sizes, you lose any formatting while saving your file, as its saves it in only a .txt format. You can't print with it. Therefore, you must copy/paste your work into a real word processor when you're done typing. Also, MS Word and other processors allow you to change background and font colors into any you might want, so there isn't much practical use for this little program.

    "regarding installation hangups"

    February 10, 2008  |   By nateyg

    Version: Dark Room 0.8b

    Pros

Didn't work for me until I visited the website and found that the program needs Microsoft .NET framework 2.0 to work. Once this was installed, the program worked great.

Also, prospective users might be confused about "installing" the program. There is no install program. You only need unzip the file.

    Cons

As for the quality of the program, my only beef is that it is limited to plain text. Italics, bold, and other simple font features would make this much more versatile (and not overly-bloated) while maintaining the spirit of the project.
