We don't really understand the mathematical mojo that powers this nifty Winamp plug-in, but we do know it makes audio files sound crystal clear. Here's the basic explanation: DFX for Winamp uses digital-signal-processing algorithms to replace high frequencies, restore lost or diminished stereo depth, increase the perceived loudness of the audio, and add rich bass sound. The result is Internet radio and compressed audio files (such as MP3s) that sound much cleaner and richer. You won't have to dig into a mess of settings to get results, since DFX for Winamp uses only a few sliders and buttons. The full version also includes 39 presets for different kinds of music, though unfortunately, the demo lets you use only three. It also disables the 3D-surround feature, which supposedly creates a surround-sound effect from a normal two-speaker setup. Nevertheless, even the trial version of DFX for Winamp makes your MP3s sound much, much better. On top of that, it's free, and you can use it as long as you want. So what are you waiting for?

"works when you buy it"

October 19, 2014  |  By scratchmb

 |  Version: DFX Audio Enhancer 11.105

Pros

It improves audio for my headphones for either the ones I use on my PC and the Sennheiser headphones I have for my TV that I run from my computer through HDMI. Basically, I'm in a tiny apartment, with paper thin walls. So headphones are a must, both so I don't bother the other tenants, and they don't bother me. What it comes down to is my computer and my television is my entertainment system and DFX gives me that big sound. I've created tons of preset templates for audio equalization to appease both sets of headphones for either different genres of music as well as different movie audio formats.

Cons

They don't provide free updates. They keep plugging Max Recorder, which I have already purchased and upgraded as it's a great tool. I also wish they would find a way to recognize me as a customer so they wouldn't keep asking for my email address. Of course I can ignore both of these, but the point is, it is just unprofessional from a company that has a lot of audio technology and DFX Audio Enhancer is simply just a taste. The biggest con is it in not that friendly to get it setup properly in Windows 7. Once I got around all of the nuisance fixes, which I had to do mostly myself, it is incredible. I am not fond of software that is troublesome especially when I pay for it.

Summary

A working version of DFX, and making sure that all of your audio and video programs are plugin compatible with DFX, such as Windows Media, Winamp, and VLC for examples, it really puts a lot of punch into your audio files. The trick is learning how to create user templates for different applications, and knowing how to get the best out of your preferences. Half the fun is tinkering. If you have malware, then you probably downloaded it from a third party site. If you don't know how to get rid of malware, then you shouldn't download anything. It's your choice to own a computer and use the internet. Yet is it also your responsibility to learn how to protect yourself and your computer. If you do, then in truth, you really don't have anything to complain about. Whining is only for the wont of ignorance. Think about it.

"Playback was jumpy. Left a malware toolbar/"

November 25, 2012  |  By checkingitout48

 |  Version: DFX Audio Enhancer 11.105

Pros

None for me.

Cons

Doesn't work for me. Music playback was broken & jumpy. Worst of all, it left a malware toolbar that was hard to get rid of.

"Nag, nag, nag"

November 25, 2012  |  By mbj

 |  Version: DFX Audio Enhancer 11.105

Pros

Sounds pretty good. . . when it's on

Cons

Shuts down and nags user to buy full version every few minutes
Can try only one feature before buying
Fake "sale" price is irritating, undermines credibility of product

Summary

Other reviewers have said that the one feature available in the free/trial version simply increases volume. After a week or so of using the version on my desktop and laptop, I'm not sure. However, the "nag" pop-up is so irritatingly frequent--every few songs in Pandora, for example--that I have developed a negative attitude toward the developer. In addition, the nag screens are constantly offering a "limited time only" price which is the same on every computer, every day, and appears to be the real price. This makes be question the integrity of the company. Since the program does improve the sound on my laptop, I'll probably get over my snit long enough to buy the "discount" license at some point, hope I'll never need tech support (see other reviewers' comments), and hope another more forthcoming developer will step in with a product I can fully--or more full--preview.

"Use the paid version"

November 12, 2012  |  By noinipo

 |  Version: DFX Audio Enhancer 11.105

Pros

I remember back in the seventies, I bought a "booster" loudspeaker for my tape recorder. It was great. DFX does the same for me on my computer. Easy to install and so easy to use that you can't go wrong, but try to opt out of the toolbar.
But then again, I recommend you always do that, whatever program you install.
DFX Gives you a more "complete" listening experience than any other sound enhancer I've tried. There may be better "real" equalizer programs with more advanced settings out there.
But for me DFX is perfect

Cons

May not be suitable for all kinds of music but it sure put the Rock'n'Roll back into those lame MP3s.
The "Free" version is really nothing but a Trial version and will stop working properly after just a week or two. At least that's what happened to a friend of mine. So if you don't intend to buy the licence, I'd say - don't even bother installing it.

Summary

One of my favourite programs! The complaints I've read in other reviews can probably be addressed by using two of my other favourite programs: Soluto an Revo Uninstaller. Soluto is a good and intuitive Start-Up program. If you find that DFX pops up when you don't want it to, use this program to delay start-up or take it out of your boot sequence all together. If you want to uninstall DFX use Revo Uninstaller. But be careful. Revo is a very powerful tool. If you just want to get rid of the toolbar (and if you've installed by mistake, believe me you'll want to) Iobit Uninstaller might be a better choice.
I don't know how DFX goes together with speakers as I never use them. But I discovered something interesting about DFX and earphones. I use high quality earphones with my computers. Usually Sony, sometimes Philips. But once used a cheap no-brand pair, and DFX sounded terrible. It actually sounded better with DFX turned off! When I switched back to my usual earphones DFX sounded great again.
Buy DFX, use high quality earphone and you'll never regret it.
I haven't.
