"greatest thing for people who just have to use windows"
Version: Cygwin 1.3.22-1
Summary
Installation is slow and you have to choose which packages you want to install and you have to know what these packages do. Go to the cygwin website for detailed instructions. Don't forget to put C:\cygwin\bin\ into the path to run ls and rm in normal DOS mode. Other than that Cygwin is great, it's great for people who have no option but to use windows and for those who wish to transition into it.
PS-Certain sites don't work, just try a different one if the download doesn't start. -

"Great Program!"
Version: Cygwin 1.3.22-1
Summary
This is a great program! It might not be for everyone but it defiently makes using windows alot easier.
Somethings to note though is that this thing is going to take a large hunk of space on your computer and you have to download it all. All my high speed light (equivalant to dual ISDN) at around 15kb/s it took six hours to download. On a DSL it took about an hour.
Second is that the ftp first on the list is most likely the fastest (I found so at least)
Third, The first time I tried to install it, someone stoped it. All the data I had on that disk (About 1.10Gb) seemed to vanish.
Fourth, I would just download the basic package first (defualt) and come back and get the rest that you need later. Some things that you might want to get later is make, more, links/lynx, c compiler, editors (Nanno and Vim are good ones), and ofcourse, what ever else you want to get.
5th, I noticed that when I went to download packages that some file that it runs after it installs it and runs it just kinda stops. If you click cancel it will be fine. Well, I hope something I just said makes sence. I am sure there is tons of typos too but anyways...have fun with this program! I love it!

"Nice Linux emulation layer for your windows box"
Version: Cygwin 1.3.22-1
Summary
Cygwin gives you linux funtionality on your windows box. You can run your favorite linux apps and use them (instead of DOS command) to do your work. You can also install linux apps as system processes (i.e. daemons), so you can, for instance, run an ssh, ftp, or other typical linux daemons.
After using it for a while, it's hard to use a Windows box w/o it. It's one of the first things I install on any new Windows box that I'm going to be doing much work with. Makes Windows bearable for Linux folks. -
"Excellent unix-type program"
Version: Cygwin 1.3.22-1

"must-have for non-beginners"
Version: Cygwin 1.3.22-1
Summary
Not easy, not visual, but provides a remarkably complete un*x environment with all the extras. Even X Windows! Provides gcc, make, everything you need to build almost anything that is POSIX. Almost too good to be true, but not a good way for beginners to get an intro to un*x.
