Editors' Review

Built around a gorgeous, newly overhauled interface, this free, GPL-licensed FTP browser is a lean, mean file-managing machine. CyberDuck can communicate with standard FTP volumes as well as the more secure SFTP. The application easily manages bookmarks with an OS X-styled drawer. We like the quick-connect drop-down, which allows you to pop into recently accessed or bookmarked servers in a snap. We generally found both up and downstream file transfers to be speedy. While Cyberduck can be seen as limited in terms of functionality due to its entry-level nature, the program handles basic tasks with ease. We recommend CyberDuck to anyone looking for a solid FTP browser.

"Solid, well-designed, intuitive; slower transfers?"

January 12, 2008  |  By iayork

 |  Version: Cyberduck 2.8.3

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've been using Cyberduck for years as my primary FTP/SFTP client. It's very well-designed, quite intuitive to use and versatile. I find Fetch (the other FTP/SFTP client I've used enough to compare) to be a little less intuitive and a less attractive (though that may be because I'm more used to Cyberduck). Both programs cover the basics very well and both offer a mostly-overlapping set of advanced tools; each has a handful of features the other doesn't but none of the differences is very significant. Both have been stable -- I have seen a couple of crashes with Cyberduck over several months, but they're rare.

The one advantage Fetch does have is that (for some reason I don't understand) Fetch consistently transfers (or at least uploads) a little faster than Cyberduck. The difference is small (e.g. the last comparison I tried had Fetch finish uploading in 5 minutes to Cyberduck's 7) but has been reproducible for several sites and over a period of a couple months. I'm not sure why there would be a difference, but there it is.

If you have lots of large (>50 MB) transfers you might save time with Fetch, but Cyberduck might make it back by being a little easier and more pleasant to use.

"Very close to totally useless"

October 02, 2013  |  By lodurr

 |  Version: Cyberduck 4.3.1

Pros

Works once you figure out how to use it.

Cons

Utterly opaque UI.

Summary

I've been a computer professional for 25 years, a lot of that providing level 1 through 3 end user support, and the Cyberduck UI makes no sense to me. Find something else, this one will make your life miserable.

"Worked great! Yay!"

May 22, 2013  |  By goldinhome

 |  Version: Cyberduck 4.3.1

Pros

Fairly intuitive interface. Drag and drop. Did the job. And it was FREE!

Cons

Didn't seem to like to upload too many files at once. Sometimes didn't seem to want to Overwrite.

Summary

First, I downloaded FileZilla but it couldn't make a connection to my main file locker. So I got CyberDuck and it had no problem with the same address. Sometimes it would overwrite a file like I wanted it to, but sometimes it gave me an error and I had to delete the old version first. Other times, if I tried to upload too many files at once, I'd get an error, but that could be because of my own wireless network at home. When I use Comcast's own web-based uploading, I have to do one file at a time and then choose each one individually and make it "public." An enormous pain. CyberDuck uploaded them as public, saving me alot of time, and I could drag and drop. Love it!

"You simply can't beat it"

April 08, 2012  |  By la_computer_guy

 |  Version: Cyberduck 4.2.1

Pros

Connects to all kinds of servers, including Rackspace Cloud and Amazon S3. Fast, intuitive, and free. I love the "edit" function, which lets me open and edit remote files locally, and Cyberduck will automatically re-upload the edited file. Everyone I work with now simply refers to it as "The Duck"...

Cons

Cons? It's awesome and free.
