Instead of mucking around with removable media, Crashplan offers up a distinct alternative. Banking on ubiquitous high-speed Internet access and more than one computer per household, this service allows you to back up your entire computer to as many discreet locations as you can manage. This includes Crashplan's servers, a second PC of yours, or even your friend's computer.

Designed for PCs and Macs, Crashplan's backups are encrypted before they're sent out. The backup process runs effortlessly in the background over a high-speed network, but we wouldn't recommend it to anyone still on a dial-up modem. The simple and intuitive interface makes preference changes easy, whether you're adding or dropping files from the backup process or choosing a new backup location.

The benefit of off-site safety and security could potentially save you thousands of dollars, as anyone who has had to salvage a fire-damaged hard drive knows. Crashplan charges 10 cents per gigabyte per month to use their servers, but the company discourages this option. Given the ever-dropping cost of memory and storage drives, Crashplan may not be the wave of the future, but it's nice to have a choice for backing up essential files other than shelling out for yet another hard drive.

"slow, no tech support, misrepresents capacity"

June 03, 2014  |  By mgNYC

 |  Version: CrashPlan 3.6.3

Pros

none - doesn't actually work and tech support is as slow and unresponsive as the program is

Cons

took more than 2 days to back up 30 mb online. have multiple computer plan and after 1 week still has not backed up anything from the second computer (new macbook air - only applications, no files yet). Tech support takes more than 20 min to answer and say first backup can take a long time (not my first backup). they say online backups can take as long a 4 days so 2 days is not an "issue". they claim they can backup also from an external drive when connected to the computer and give you options to set that up, but nothing gets backed up.

I wonder if the people who say they like this have checked to see if they have acutal files? Or have tried restoring a file? I tried with a small excel file and the file was corrupted. Does not bode well for larger files

Summary

don't waste the money or time

What's new in version 3.8.2010

CrashPlan is smarter about backing up, using less bandwidth and disk space. In other words, backups complete faster! Here's what changed:

  • Data de-duplication is even more efficient at finding data matches in your files, which means less data to back up!
  • CrashPlan's default backup file selection has been improved on Windows and Mac.
  • The Windows installer is now code signed. This means no security warnings on Windows installations.
  • The Mac Uninstaller no longer runs in terminal. Now when you uninstall CrashPlan, the Uninstaller runs in an application window. Much better!
