Version: Corum Online Game Client 20080329
"Online adventure gaming without the monthly costs"
Pros: Easy to pick up, large worlds, fairly challenging quests, great co-op
Cons: Level grinding, insane item costs and item farming, really buggy with other programs running in the background
Summary: I've been playing Corum for a while and I must say that the game is pretty fun.
The learning curve is pretty small for anyone familiar with adventure games like Diablo. Corum's play mechanics are similar to Diablo, especially how the shortcut keys are mapped.
Quests are simple at first but gradually becomes more challenging depending on your level. Your character's strengths are based on stats that distributed by points gained at leveling up. Your character also gains special abilities based on their archetype like an archer who can move speedily or a summoner who can control monsters to do his bidding.
The game is not without its downsides. One of the problems that I struggle with is that Corum is really buggy. I have software running in the background such as the on-screen display for volume and brightness but Corum somehow disturbs that process, sometimes making the speakers beep or mute.
Another problem with Corum is the constant need to level grind (leveling up). Monsters and quests can get really hard especially when getting to level 40 or so. Like many other role playing games, really hard monsters make level grinding a necessity.
With the game's free economy where players can open shop and sell items, rare item drops become extremely hard to buy. Their prices can go from thousands of kars (the game's currency) to several millions, or even billions.
Speaking of rare items, item farming becomes a necessity when trying to get better items for a character's specific archetype. Like level grinding, item farming is time consuming and really boring, to the point that you might want to put down the mouse and get some fresh air.
However, cons aside, Corum's multi-player co-op allows you to offset some of the cons such as level grinding and item farming. Experience is shared between the players in the party and items and money can be exchanged directly via requests. Like all other MMOs, the fun factor depends on the multi-player aspect.
Overall, Corum's a good game with some annoying quirks but the simple game play and multi-player aspect makes it worthwhile.
