Purchased the new version, been playing with it a few weeks and I have to say I love this program. It is more stable and speedier. The new boost slider is amazing.
Theres alot of little refinements that have eleviated small little annoyances. And I found the switch to turn of the opening window thingy. ya ho! -

Further refinement is a plus, easy access to brush controls - very nice,
speed improvements - very nice, new brushes very nice aswell. The new open docs, tutorials, access artist thingy window I'm not to thrilled with. Hopefullly an update will give us on/off control and the new logo is so annoying. -
"Painter is still too slow"
Version: Corel Painter 8.1
Summary

I like Painter in general and version 8 profoundly improves on the previous interface nightmare, but it has a serious problem: it's a snail when you save to your document. Saves, on the average, long as 20 seconds for me (using a dual 867 G4 with 1GB ram). It just feels very sluggish overall in general. There are bugs: when resizing my document rapidly with the slider my artwork blanks out to white on occasion -- it's not gone, but I have to restart the program to see my artwork again. Some interface weakpoints: can't drag items between custom palettes; sliders lack pop up menus to select values. Version 9 in the works...? -

"Works for me"

Upgrade ran flawlessly. No problem. Lot's of stuff fixed. Absolutely essential software for computer artists.
I've been using this software since the very first version ('92?), and have used it to create hundreds of published illustrations. I am glad to see Corel is working on fixing bugs and improving it (I was seriously concerned when they bought it from MetaCreations). Thanks for bringing back custom palettes (that missing feature was driving me nuts). The new interface is taking some getting used to ... but having also used Photoshop for more than ten years, it's not an uncomfortable experience. I'll get used to it.
If you are an artist, and want to draw/paint on a computer, Painter is the best program to use. There is really no other program like it. -

Wish I had discovered this software sooner, the new layout and features are just amazing. With a Wacom tablet you can do astounding things. Run don't walk to your nearest retailer and buy this program!
