    "Very Competent Software"

    November 13, 2010   |   By Shearer--2008

    Version: Compare Folders 3.4.2

    Pros

Does exactly what it is supposed to do, and does it well. If you have more than on computer, or move files around a lot, it's a bargain. Features that make it very useful for managing files, separate drives, thumb drives, you name it.

    Cons

    none that I have found.

    Summary

I keep my life on my Macs. I use CF to make sure I'm not wasting disk space with duplications, but also to assure I don't get rid of an important file by mistake. It's indispensable for version control, where a historical sequence must be maintained. It works, it's easy but powerful with file management tools, not just comparisons.

    "Works well and is stable"

    November 13, 2006   |   By macnicol_dotmac

    Version: Compare Folders 2.5.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've been using the program for several months and have had no problems withit under OSX10.4.6. Compares folders on external drives with no hesitation. The drag and drop interface is a snap. Runs quickly having compared folders with 1000s of files.

Sure miss PowerMerge under OS9 though!

Apparently there's some sort of library or something it's looking for that doesn't come with the application's installer.

I just tried this version and it fell over on its face. Seems slow as molasses and I don't find the interface very intuitive.

    "Forget the \"less than 5-star rating...totally..."

    Version: Compare Folders 1.2.6

    Summary

    ...misleading
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
and most likely caused by just a couple of posts where some rabid user encountered a problem, and rather than contact the developer (or maintain his/her own system to "prevent" problems), came here to vent and give low rating, thereby bringing down the overall rating.

This app definitely deserves 5 stars; it does a wonderful job of giving very useful information relative to the contents of two folders you need to know about; it's fast, highly customizable in your desired "comparison" criteria, and presents results nicely with options to perform a number of desired actions on each item listed in the results, if so desired.

It took me a few minutes to get the "hang" of it, and, since my first comparison involved folders with nearly 10,000 files/folders in each of the two being compared, and the one folder had literally hundreds of "different" files due to a malfunction in a backup utility, I was unsure that the results were accurate or would be meaningful.

I soon discovered that this app was 100% accurate; I just had a really messed-up "second" folder that was one of the two being compared.

Anyway, I highly recommend this app, even if you're not exactly sure how often that you will use it; download it and buy it and I bet you'll find yourself using it quite often.

Also, currently, there is a "discount" deal on this app together with another utility from this developer; Drive Gauge, which gives you a nicely-presented display of one's drive's current usage/capacity in a percentage guage. Very well done, and just a nice little utility to have available whenever you might like to check status. Also, provides warnings when drives are getting close to full.

Both apps together for just $12.70 - that's worth it even if they DIDN'T work! ;-)

I "sort of missed" the special, due to my hastiness in trying to find a utiliy to compare folders and tried to get the discount on just the Compare Folders purchase; the transaction, needless to say, didn't work, after buying Compare Folders and resolving my issues, I went back to look at Drive Guage and think that I'm going to go ahead and buy it even though I won't get the discount. It's only $5, so...

Overall, a developer who produces nice applications and has a good philosophy about everything (go through the whole site if you have time); deserves our support.

    "Problems fixed"

    September 13, 2004   |   By John Sawyer

    Version: Compare Folders 1.2.6

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Nexus has fixed the problems described below--clicking on menus, etc. now works. I sent them my Console log showing Compare Folders' activity, and it had the info they needed to track down the problem. Since logging an app's key activities to Console can be so handy for the developer in tracking down problems, I wonder why more apps don't do this--as it is, the only log entry that most apps create is a crash log, which is also handy for developers, but not every problem that an application has results in a crash.

i can confirm Weezer's good experience with the Nexus developers--they've responded very quickly to my emails regarding bugs and feature requests, sometimes within minutes after I've sent the email. The best approach when you have a problem with software, is to first contact the developer, and see if they can fix it. I've found that if you first post your experiences on a software download site like Versiontracker, that often the developer doesn't hear about it for a while, since it's not always practical for them to track user's posts on all the sites where their software is located. Though many developers do at least check Versiontracker posts, not all developers check here as often as they check their email. Though it's tempting to post bug reports before you contact the developer (and I think some developers are a little thin-skinned about this), sometimes it might be best to hold off until you get a response from the developer, since otherwise too many posts wind up leaving a trail of bug reports without any followup from the people who post them (or the developer) when the problem gets fixed, so that the posts make the software look worse than it is.

    "Awesome support, cool app"

    September 01, 2004   |   By the_tick

    Version: Compare Folders 1.2.5

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This app is pretty cool. And the developers are pretty responsive, posting here and stating that they will fix the issue. Very nice.

I've been able to compare the contents of a couple of larger folders with this program without any issues. Works really well and fast. Any issues I do have the developers have stated they will fix.
