Although it bills itself as a weapon in the fight against spyware, this simple program merely handles basic privacy-protection chores. CompSweep's ho-hum interface is at least simple, with buttons and tabs arranged in an easy-to-understand manner. The program can clean up basic Web-surfing traces from Internet Explorer and can tidy up common Windows system areas such as the Recycle Bin. CompSweep also can delete files or folders but doesn't offer the option to securely shred data. The pop-up blocker works well enough but lacks even basic features such as a whitelist and blacklist. The ability to encrypt files using 64- and 128-bit algorithms is a nice touch, but we're confused as to where the alleged spyware-fighting tools are. There's no scanner, no real-time protection module, and no indication that CompSweep is reliable against any sort of malware threat. Also, in our tests, running CompSweep impacted the performance of Word, Excel, TextPad, and Outlook. In the end, this program is really just a very simple privacy-protection program with a short trial period and notable performance issues.
