    "Getting Better"

    August 29, 2007   |   By timtatwork

    Version: Cog 0.06

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Great audio player that continues to get better. I love the flexibility and the new features in the new version. I don't know why but it seems that the audio gets really distorted once I adjust the volume slider to more than about 80%, I don't have this problem with other players. I was having a problem with Cog crashing at startup after moving audio files in the Finder from where they were before. Checked the developer's site and found the solution in the forum (which was to download the nightly build), so if you have any problems make sure you check there as the developer is really helpful.

I had no problem opening the dmg file. The program seems to work fine. Nothing fancy, but for a fast, simple music player that doesn't hog my system resources, this is among the nicer ones I've found.

    Version: Cog 0.05

Great for many uses. I like to compare the qualities of different formats for the same track; Cog makes this simple and practical. Totally useful in situations where importing to iTunes is overkill.

    Awesome product.

    "that's it"

    Version: Cog 0.05

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
The Audioplayer. Accepts folders dropped to app icon, but do not get confused if there are txt, nfo of m3u files also. Sensible interface (though might be more minimalist... like SoundApp was). No key for STOP command, which might be useful, command-. closes list window(?). I would prefer plain arrow key to move next/previous file, but command-arrow works well enough. Does not show which song is playing in the list view -- there should be some icon or indicator for it (well it displays playing song name in the bottom -- it is not enough). Translates numbered filenames to format of track number and name in the listview, which is OK. Would be nice to have option to read track number from tags too and reorder songs according that. Even better would be a command to add track numbers to filenames...

All in all, a very good player. Faster and lighter than iTunes, does not get confused like Audion, more sensible and flexible than DropSound.

    Voila.

Smart Folders + Cog beats iTunes hands down. It's simple, elegant, plays virtually everything and has literally made music for fun for me.

(You will still need iTunes to sync your iPod, I guess.)

    "Sweet!"

Dude! Sweet! It's like SoundApp, but OS X! Gods, I've been looking for something like this since I switched to OSX (and I did /that/ when it went public beta!)

The only thing I'm missing is multiple playlists open simultaneously, SoundApp-style. I wouldn't really mind if they had a player each (make that window an NSDocument instead)

    Version: Cog 0.01

    Summary

but you need to click the forward seek button to play and the buttons seem a bit confused all round. Still, there's always a place for something that'll play FLAC/APE and it is only 0.01.
