"Rough edges"

September 20, 2005  |  By Satyre

 |  Version: Cocoa NewsPost 1.6.5

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I purchased Cocoa NewsPost after having difficulties with the available AppleScript based applications that I am aware of, Hermes, Osiris and Ibis. I have used Osiris sucessfully in the past, but recently it has been posting a random number of posts before stopping and complaining that I did not love it.

Cocoa NewsPost will post your binary files to usenet, but the quality leaves much to be desired. For example, it will download a list of usenet groups so you can select the groups to post to, but doesn't sort them. All 6500 or so groups are displayed in random order. If you drag folder of files into the posting list it fails. If you drag a selection of files into the posting list it posts them in random order. There is no option to display file size in the subject line, which is common in usenet posts. Compared to what is available on Windows, this is an embarassment for Macintosh users.

I believe I paid $25 for Thoth, an amazing piece of software. I paid $20 for Cocoa NewsPost. If you need it buy it, but don't expect to be impressed.

"Does NOT do exactly ..."

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
How can you say it does "exactly?" The PAR thing is totally hosed. And then there's the inelegant way of naming the sfv and par files based on the first item's name. We should be given the option to name. Can't be all that hard for a $20 app. MacPAR and MacSFV do so and don't cost a penny. Even if all I cared about was posting whatever files I already had, there's the inelegant inabilty to have any flexibility over how files are numbered. We are stuck with File # of #. Hell, we all know they're files. I may go back to POWER-POST.

I begrudgingly do still recommend CNP as an alternative.

"A great app, does exactly what it says"

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Absolutely wonderful app, but some minor nags:
Needs more options, like setting up a multi part queue (with different headers/names/etc), and a built in .nfo generator would be awesome in addition to an .sfv generator.
The .sfv generator does work, but titles the .sfv file as the first file of the post. Would be better if we could customize this title.
Also could use an online support forum (as of now it is simply a question/answer search that is inconvenient).
A bit expensive as well, but hey, it does work wonders and its the ONLY thing for OS X that autoposts without the help of Thoth or other newsreaders.
Great App!

"Getting better!"

January 17, 2005  |  By macfeller

Summary

Glad to see the new version. I'm still not sure about it's using correct PAR settings. Maybe at the end of the month I'll be able to pay and get some tech support. I notice a favorites thing. I hadn't noticed since in the trial we can only use one group, but with the previous versions there must not be anyway to manage groups you want to use. I assume this favorites thingy addresses this?

"Works for me better than alternatives"

November 24, 2004  |  By D Templeton

 |  Version: Cocoa NewsPost 1.2.1

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I tested this for a day then registered (for $19 using paypal). After about 5 minutes setup, this is a 1-click operation. Choose your files, choose your newsgroups and server, and go. It generates par2 files, processes and uploads. The options the other reviewer cited are definitely inferior. CocoaXpost (?) is not found on Google except for his review, Ibis is not available, and Osiris gives me an applescript error with Newswatcher. IMO Mac users have been shut out of the modern posting environment until this app. Demo mode is limited to one server, one newsgroup, and 10 files, but that's enough to test it extensively.

Other responses to the previous reviewer: V1.2.1 does not put quotes around the file names. It does not generate MD5 files, but with Par files do you really need them?

Thanks for a great app!

"Great start. But $20?!"

November 02, 2004  |  By macfeller

 |  Version: Cocoa NewsPost 1.2

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
It puts quotation marks around the file names, does not do MD5, and the
file numbering is not as elegant as Osiris, Ibis, cocoaXpost, et.al.
Twenty bucks is steep but I'd gladly pay it for the worthwhile app.
Until then I'll use Osiris, checksum+, and Split&Concat (posting,
verification, and PAR2s, respectively - 1st 2 free, S&N minimal
donation). Here's to hoping the developer gets it right, and soon!
