"Basic functions work, but restoring backup fails"

    April 1, 2012  |   By MichaelRayBrown

Version: Cloud Desktop Professional Edition x64 3.2.799

Gladinet would be a terrific program... if it worked. To be fair, its basic features are functional. It makes cloud services such as Amazon S3 accessible as drives on your system. That's handy.

As a backup service is where Gladinet stumbles. If you want open file backup, versioning, block-level backup, and encryption -- features we have come to expect -- you have to sign up for their Premium service, which uses Gladinet's desktop management software as a front-end to their own servers. For a fee of $59.99 per year, you get only 10 GB of storage, which is pitifully small.

Uploads are comparatively fast, but every 10 minutes (presumably when it's set it to synchronize data), my system would freeze for about a minute. That alone would give it a thumb's down. However, it skips files it is supposed to back up, and every attempt to restore my data failed. Error messages would pop up that the files could not be decoded.

A second attempt to download these files would succeed, but then the software would hang at "unpacking" them. CPU usage would rise to about 40 percent... and stay there.

This is for version 4.0.856. As other users have mentioned, Gladinet just is not ready for prime-time. I'm not trusting them with my data.
