Editors' Review

Using a challenge/response system, this program effectively blocks spam from your e-mail account and offers extras, which makes it a great option among the many spam blockers available. ChoiceMail blocks spam by sending a reply e-mail to any new senders, asking them to verify their identities. Because spammers won't go through this process, ChoiceMail won't forward any spam to you. The program builds whitelists and blacklists out of identity confirmations and lets you customize those lists. Some of your correspondents may not like the extra step of confirming their identities, but they will only have to do it once. In addition to these strict guidelines, you can create keywords that ChoiceMail will look for before sending e-mail on to you. ChoiceMail also comes with an extensive set of rules for blocking e-mail, such as common keywords and other obvious spam traits (such as using certain types of HTML). We particularly like being able to pick and choose the rules we want to apply because it lets us set a precise level of protection. ChoiceMail cannot be used by Outlook users who are on Microsoft Exchange Server unless it supports POP3 accounts. In spite of that, ChoiceMail does a great job of blocking unwanted spam, although you will have to get your correspondents to take an extra step before they can e-mail you.

"ChoiceMail Just Just Keeps Getting Better."

December 08, 2004  |  By WheelieUK

 |  Version: ChoiceMail Free 2.66

Summary

I have been an avid user of Choicemail since Version 1.x. Whilst the concept of challenge and response was good, there were several flaws that made this programme most useful in combination with others. Since those days, almost all of those issues have been addressed and Choicemail is now one of the most secure and reliable anti spam software programmes on the market. I have no hesitation in recommending the pro version and think the small cost is well worth the investment. I would like to see the ability to send from virtual addresses, rather than just send (A feature not included in the free version) and see support for Gmail and Lycos, but 2 out of a wish list of nearly a hundred a little over a year ago is very impressive. I have had to contact the support department on two seperate occassions for various matters and they were quick and willing to work with me to resolve the problems. On the latter occassion I even received an international call from the author to discuss the problem in more detail. In that instance the was a problem with the ISP, which is outside of their control. I have nothing but priase and high regard for the programme and those who support it.

"Gave me back my email."

September 07, 2005  |  By WPG

 |  Version: ChoiceMail Free 2.66

Pros

Stopped all spam instantly. Email is downloaded to ChoiceMail first - every few minutes. Program filters email before it is sent to your email client. Only known senders get through (based on your address book) all others are challenged by return message. The barnyard follies do not reply... Additional message rules refine permissions. Lists and forums are easy to manage. Massive downloads to the spam folder no longer delay your work if you only check email daily. ChoiceMail has reviewed messages as they arrive.

"Absolutely superb"

August 19, 2005  |  By peaceful1

 |  Version: ChoiceMail Free 2.66

Pros

When I got Choicemail I was receiving literally a thousand pieces of spam a day (and about fifty legitimate messages), thanks to my having put my primary e-mail address on my web site. Two years later, I'm down to less than 10% spam, thanks in large part of Choicemail (and, of course, to changing the way I provide my e-ddress on my web site.)

I'm writing this now out of gratitude to Choicemail technical support. I ran into an access violation problem yesterday, sent a support request via the vendor's web site, and had the correct solution within minutes. Outstanding support and, unfortunately, beyond rare in today's technology environment.

Cons

Not exactly a dislike, but an observation: I've turned off Choicemail's challenge feature because it seemed to be confirming my e-ddress to spammers. My mail volume is such that I can scan the list of unknown senders, preview messages that intrigue me, and add to my whitelist those senders whose messages I want to receive. I couldn't have done this when Choicemail was filtering my daily ration of a thousand spams; now I can.

"Great Program! Fantastic Service!"

August 18, 2005  |  By techlawyer

 |  Version: ChoiceMail Free 2.66

Pros

I've used this program for several years and am now using version 3.0. It was good to start with but with every version, it's been significantly improved. With all the spam I get, I just can't live without it. I love the power and the flexibility of the program. It creates the standard white list from your address book -- and from outgoing mail you send to folks who are not on your address book. But it goes well beyond that. If provides you with built-in rules -- like automatically rejecting e-mails that come from spammers who spoof your address. And it also provides you with the ability to add rules of your own (as simple or as complicated as you like) -- to accept or reject e-mails. And you can designate domains from which to accept or reject e-mail.

As good as the program is, the support is even better. On the rare occasion that I have encountered a problem, help comes often within the hour -- and they keep working with you until the problem is solved.

I can't say enough about this program and about the way they support it. Other software providers definitely could learn from their example!

"Version 3.1 is simply the BEST anti-spam filter you can get!"

July 11, 2005  |  By mosszaphod

 |  Version: ChoiceMail Free 2.66

Pros

I think the idea of a permission system is GREAT idea. It is setup so you have 2 lists. A white list (friends and people you want to e-mail you) and a black list (people you don't want e-mailing you). If an e-mail arrives and is not on your 'white list' the program will send the sender an e-mail asking them for a few things like their name, reason they want to talk to you and it will ask them to put the number in they see on the screen (no spam can do that!). After they do they then you will shortly later get a popup on your screen (which can be turn off if you like) showing you who they are, why they want to talk, and it asks if you would like to accept or deny them. Accepting will add them to your white list. You can also add people to your white list manually or ChoiceMail will do that for you to whomever you send an e-mail to. I like this system because you don't have to pay for yearly updates and they technology it has will take a long time for spam to figure away around it. Take it from someone in the computer field for over 25 years...buy it now to say goodbye to spam! :)

Cons

Sometimes the options can be overwhelming. Tech support is good in case you need them though.

** NOTE: if you have an Nforce3 chipset with a Gigabit Ethernet card you should do the following if you are having random troubles with ChoiceMail (and it will help in general..it has nothing to do with ChoiceMail) there is a setting on your network card that should be changed. Not for this program only but in general. Here is what to do:

Please do the following...

Open you network and dialup connections.

Right click on your "Local area connection and select properties.

At the top you should see the name of your adapter (NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller) or something like that.

Click on the "Configure" button next to it.

Switch to the "Advanced" tab.

You will see a list of properties on the left hand side. Click on

"Checksum offload" and then make sure that the drop down box on the right side says "Disable"

Do the same for Segmentation Offload.

"This is a truly excellent product."

June 22, 2005  |  By mikejody

 |  Version: ChoiceMail Free 2.66

Pros

This product has removed all junk and spam email not only from my "inbox" but from my entire email client. I tried "junk filter" programs, but all they did is move the junk from one folder (my inbox) to another (the junk folder). I still had to go in to the junk folder and see if any false positives were there, and check for any other email I needed. Now, with Choicemail, I have eliminated all that extra work and have eliminated junk and spam entirely from my email. Choicemail is a truly excellent product.

Also, I had entered my smtp server wrongly and couldn't figure it out, so I contacted tech support. Over the phone, they walked me through proper set up, and they did so quickly and efficiently.

I give Choicemail 5 stars because that is the maximum avaialble. I would give 10 if possible.

"This program gets the job done for spam blocking!!!"

June 01, 2005  |  By Denali777

 |  Version: ChoiceMail Free 2.66

Pros

Because valid e-mail users have to register with you it keeps out all the "phishing" schemes and other bogus e-mails like send us your account information because you have inherited a fortune from someone you don't even know. It also keeps people from taking over your computer and address book.

Cons

I had some trouble setting up one particular e-mail account I have. This e-mail account has unusual circumstances. This issue was resolved through the tech support ticket system that was very helpful.

"Support rarely needed, When it is needed, it's excellent."

 |  Version: ChoiceMail Free 2.66

Pros

It does what it's supposed to do. Easily. It stops the spam.

I've been using this product for years. I've needed support twice. Each time, the response was VERY quick, VERY helpful, and VERY complete. It's hard to articulate, but you really wish every software firm could interact with the customer after the sale like this company does.

As a user of ChoiceMail for a number of years, I find it to be the most comprehensive anti-spam software I've come across. The versatility of allowing me to choose the filtering is a great feature! When I've had questions, their response has been quick and helpful - whether via e-mail, Tight VNC or phone.
