    "It WORKS!"

    December 30, 2003  |   By mr tew

    Version: Change Desktop 2.4.2

    Summary

I thougth that this fantastic program had stopped working in Panther permanantly, but I still tried it every few weeks because I missed it so much. Finally it dawned on me that most apps can be fixed just by throwing away their prefs so I tried that and it works!!! This fantastic free app actually WORKS again! It's so great to have a desktop changer back. Apple's version doesn't even change the desktop... it's just running a slideshow over the top of the desktop picture. I love this app!

    "The best"

    November 24, 2003  |   By Mikuro

    Version: Change Desktop 2.4.2

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This is EXACTLY what I've been looking for. I'd been using OS X built-in randomization feature, but it was really bugging me for several reasons. 1) It couldn't pick from multiple folders, so I had to make symbolic links of all my pics in one huge folder (aliases won't work). 2) The only way to change the desktop picture manually is to open the preference pain (misspelling intentional), wait FOREVER for it to load and display all the images in that annoying little display bar, change the timing settings, and then change them back. 3) It brought my system to a screeching halt for 5-10 seconds every time it changed the background, presumably because I have so many images (over a thousand). 4) There was no way to see the name of the currently selected background without poking around in the plist in your preferences folder. ChangeDesktop fixes all these problems, and does so very elegantly.

You can select any number of folders to get images from, so no more sorting nightmares. You can change the desktop in a flash using the menu extra's "Change Picture Now" command. It's FAST, even with my ungodly amount of images. And best of all, the menu extra lets you see the name of the current picture, and select it in the Finder just like that. Perfect!

That would be enough for me, but ChangeDesktop has some other nice features, too, such as Change on Startup, Change on Wake, No Repeat Pictures, and automatic smart exclusion of thumbnails (such as in iPhoto folders).

There are only two problems I've encountered with ChangeDesktop, and neither are terribly big. One is that right when I installed it, it didn't seem to work, because I didn't realize I had to disable OS X's built-in randomization feature to let ChangeDesktop do its thing. I figured that out in a minute, though, even with my self-defeating "never RTFM" policy.

The second is a bit more serious. It seems that whenever I try to launch the server (the background app that actually handles the image changing) from the menu extra, it gets corrupt and fails to launch, and I need to download a fresh copy. The solution is just to launch it from the actual ChangeDesktop application instead of the menu extra.

But, that little gotcha aside, this has fit the bill perfectly for me. 5 stars.
