Editors' Note: This demo features two surfers, two beaches, and two playing modes.
Editors' reviewSurfing doesn't generally translate well to the medium of video games, but Championship Surfer somehow makes it work. The demo version of the game lets you play an arcade version and a Free Surfing version on two of the many beaches the full version offers. The full version boasts eight surfers and more than 30 boards, and the demo offers two surfers and a few boards. Smooth 3D graphics greet you, with environmental effects such as rain to make the experience more realistic. The waves slowly swell to size, and the lips curl and crash as you surf ahead of the breaks, just out of harm's way. Use the keyboard and arrow buttons or a controller to cut back, ride the lip of the wave, and even launch high into the air to get extra points in the arcade mode. Some aspects of the arcade mode are unrealistic, such as explosive mines in the water and an overabundance of scuba divers, but the weird and outlandish are what make arcade modes fun. Overall, Championship Surfer succeeds where other surfing games haven't, making it a great game for both surfers and others who are curious about the sport.
