Though this hearts simulator is full-featured and technically free, you'll have to tolerate some semi-invasive behavior to download it. The game comes with a toolbar from the developer, and if you don't agree to install it, you won't be able to play. If that weren't enough, you'll also find an extra shortcut placed on your desktop without your permission. 100% Free Hearts Card Game's cartoon graphics are amusing enough; you can learn and play all the game's variations against your PC or against human opponents on the LAN or GameSpy lobby servers. The help menu provides immediate access to online tournaments and leagues. The computer players are real personalities differing by skill, memory, predictability, aggressiveness, and even taunts. The game lets you configure card decks and table style. You can set game options such as conventions, speed, scoring rules, and even the tone of players' remarks. To brush up on rules and strategy, use the tutorial and auto hints. If you're playing as a beginner, you can always take back a play or throw a pie at your opponent. On most counts we like this game, but as is always the case, we wish the bundled software would vanish.
