"For the price, it's hard to beat!"

Summary

Carrara 5 is a great step forward for the product line. I have been playing with the product for some time now (in beta), and I will have to say that I am very happy with the new features and changes.

The two biggest complaints I have are that the documentation needs a serious updating (some chapters haven't been updated sense version 3), and they decided to leave out the planned support for camera mapping in this version. Bummer :(

Beyond that I think Carrara provided the best price/performance balance of the 3D apps currently available. I have virtually all the others 3D apps (Maya, MotionBuilder, C4D, Lightwave, Electric Image, 3D Invigorator, Modo and so on) for the Mac. But when I need it done fast with good visual quality my go-to 3D app now is Carrara.

I tested Carrara 5 Pro on a Dual 2Ghz G5 with 2.5GB RAM and ATI 9800 Pro, along with 2 AMD PC render nodes running across a Gigabit network.

"Quantum leap forward"

With version 5, this program has evolved into an indespensible tool in my studio. Whether I'm creating for print, web or broadcast, the ease of this program and speed of rendering is awesome (especially the network rendering). I've been able to do photorealistic "photo shoots" for clients that don't have product ready to use by importing their CAD files yet can just as easily make the same image look like a napkin scketch. Nice stuff.

Not only is the price on Carrara extremely reasonable for all it's power, but top notch plug-ins for this product are so inexpensive it's astonishing.

Excellent program, and much faster with the recent update.

Professional level results from renderer, but I use formZ for modeling.

"Gotta say I like this program...."

A fine 3D programs but not without problems. Simple but non-standard interface sure looks good but at times can be counter intuitive. Does not have near the power of Maya but much easier to use and access features. Everything you need to model, paint, animate and render a project. No network rendering but at least multi-thread so it place nice when rendering in the background. Sometime lethargic rendering.

This is a nice, easy package for the beginner 3D artist..that still has enough power to grow into.

"Excellent"

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
As a print graphic designer I finally decided to dabble in the realm of 3D to spice up some of my wild creative ideas. After initially trying LightWave 7.5 for one project and playing with Maya I've realised that these programs are a little 'too-much' for my 3D learning curve so I decided to back-up a little and chose Carrara Studio 2 as my weapon of choice after reading a few very promising reviews. Well I'm a month in and can't imagine ever looking back. Carrara Studio 2 is absolutely superb. Its interface is inviting and relatively easy to navigate as well as it's whole working philosophy. The modeling tools are simple to use and with a little imagination you can really produce some excellent stuff. Some people seem to have a problem with Carrara, which I really can't understand. Maybe these people are used to the likes of LightWave and Maya and see it as a little 'toy', however for those of us on a limited budget looking for a pro quality 3D application with a render output quality to die for then Carrara Studio 2 really has to be the only serious alternative. Computer Arts, the UK magazine could never have got a review as wrong in all their life and NO I don't work for Eovia! Download the demo and really give it a good chance. I can also recommend the excellent VTC training CD which really pushed my understanding of 3D and the program to new levels. Eovia have done a fantastic job and are a small company who really care about their end-users. Five stars hands down!
