    "Fly in the ointment"

    October 06, 2014   |   By mzulgis

    Version: Carbon Copy Cloner 4.0.3274

    Pros

    Great product, works as advertised...

    Cons

...unless you upgrade your Mac. Bombich are asking for money to upgrade to the current version just 5 months and 11 days after I bought it.
The version I bought in April 2014 will not run on my laptop so after just 5 months I am being forced into another purchase.

"I like the old version better"

    October 01, 2014   |   By hudsonw

    Version: Carbon Copy Cloner 4.0

    Pros

The new version works perfectly fine. It puts a convenient icon in the menu bar.

    Cons

The old version works perfectly fine also. I prefer the old version because I do several concurrent backups and I can see all the progress bars at the same time.

    Summary

Unless there is something technically wrong with Ver. 3.5.7, or if Ver. 3.5.7 will not work with Yosemite, I'll use the old version.

"The best backup setup for Mac I've tried so far."

    May 04, 2014   |   By Overdinner

    Version: Carbon Copy Cloner 3.5.4

    Pros

This program can clone your source drive, including the OS. If your computer dies hard, you can take your external backup drive and connect it to another Mac with a compatible OS, and in System Preferences, Startup Disk, select and confirm your external drive as the boot drive, hit restart, and presto! You are up and running! Everything is there! A total disaster to up and running in just minutes! What other backup setup does that? On older PPC Macs, you also have this ability with a Firewire drive external setup (a USB port connection won't boot on PPC). On Intel Macs, USB will work. In addition, you have a lot of options on how to set it up, daily, weekly, monthly. It will remind you if your drive is turned off. Just turn on your drive when the reminder window appears, and it takes care of the rest. You can even select to have CCC automatically unmount your backup drive when the backup is complete. No more need to run your backup drive 24/7.

    Cons

Let me know if you find any significant cons, because I can't really think of any. It's on every Mac I own now, all the way back to my PPC machines. The author is dedicated and responsive, and has regularly updated and improved this software.

    Summary

If you want a setup that puts you back where you were faster than anything else out there, this is it. The ability of being able to boot on your CCC backup is just phenomenal. Note that Time Machine does not clone your OS like CCC does. You can't boot on a Time Machine backup.

"Carbon Copy Cloner is invaluable when you need it."

    February 22, 2014   |   By snackwog

    Version: Carbon Copy Cloner 3.5.4

    Pros

Simple and clean. Absolutely perfect for migrating/upgrading disk drives. Also a great way to do back up work. Support is excellent. I had a specific question for them and they were exceptionally responsive and helpful.

    Cons

    None come to mind.

    Summary

I have not needed to use Carbon Copy Cloner often. But when I did, it was a very useful and valuable piece of software. Bottom line, it saves me time. And to me, not much is more valuable than my time.

"Works very well. Well worth the price"

    December 04, 2013   |   By pierre godin

    Version: Carbon Copy Cloner 3.5.4

    Pros

CCCloner is a great product. I recommend a disk repair software be used to defrag and clear the volume after copying.

    Cons

The CNET web site is very confusing with all the Downoload Now tabs which are not related to the product you are trying to download.

    Summary

CNET should remove all the Free Download now tabs as they are all spam.
Also, Cnet should recognize all keyboards, not just Standard English which is a very limited unit.

"Carbon Copy Cloner: superb solution for what you need"

    August 17, 2013   |   By resedaruss

    Version: Carbon Copy Cloner 3.5.2

    Pros

First, one needs to decide what one wants from a 3rd-party backup application. In my opinion, we just need one that makes clones of the source-disk. Archival backups are handled perfectly by Apple's built-in Time Machine.

But, you can't boot from a Time-Machine backup. That's why you want a clone. The best backup solution is both a Time-Machine backup and a clone backup--both running on a schedule in order to catch all permutations of the source disks contents.

CCC is 1) fast (taking 90 minutes to backup 250 GB onto an erased USB 2 drive), 2) runs unobtrusively in the background without causing issues with any other users of my Mac that may be logging on and off during the backup, and 3) takes about 5 minutes to perform incremental backups during scheduled runs.

After a 15-year quest for an issue-free backup application (of which many of my previous candidates cost me plenty), I now have an elegant solution for only $40--Carbon Copy Cloner.

    Cons

I don't know of any serious cons. Some users may be put off by a scheduler that one has to be moderately creative to make work, say, every hour on the hour, but most people will figure out the obvious way that that can be accomplished. I wrote the company about this and they replied back that they are doing a rewrite of the scheduler that will make it more simple and friendly.

If nothing else, that in itself is evidence that the company cares about this product and is dedicated to making it the best product they can.

    Summary

I can't imagine needing more than Carbon Copy Cloner and Time Machine archival backups. Both make a complete backup solution.

One could rotate through backup disks, and keep some of them off-site for a truly business-oriented approach for keeping data that can't be lost, but home users would neither put up with the expense nor the rigor of multiple off-site backups.

Having a CCC clone and Time Machine archive handles everything I'm going to worry about. I might lose data based on a disaster of some kind that destroys my home office. But I'll deal with that contingency later, if and when it becomes necessary.

    "Continues to be Great"

    July 13, 2013   |   By WGibson6481

    Version: Carbon Copy Cloner 3.5.2

    Pros

I have used CCC for about 10 years (since it was released as part of Ten for X Utilities v2. It continues to be the state of the art, IF you use a Mac, you cannot afford to be without this utility program. And, as it is free, you really cannot afford to be without it.

    Cons

    I cannot think of any.

"Excellent product that does what it is supposed to do."

    April 28, 2013   |   By jimmcacoe

    Version: Carbon Copy Cloner 3.5.2

    Pros

Pretty easy to setup, i.e. schedule; works flawlessly, no problems; shows a popup after running the backup that lets you know it completed the backup.

    Cons

If you want more information on folder sizes, etc., you have to dig a bit deeper than with Super Duper, however I had no mystery popups from Apple about "run or quit scripts" that constantly blocked Super Duper from doing the backups, an apparently rare problem on a Mac, but a frustrating one, so I shut down Super Duper and rely solely on CCC.

    Summary

I love Carbon Copy Cloner. It is simple to set up and it works every time.

    • CCC now offers a dialog box to opt out of a backup task that is scheduled to occur when the target volume is reattached
    • Resolved an issue in which an existing disk image selected as the target would not get mounted during a "Copy everything" backup
    • When creating a new sparse image during a "Copy everything" backup, the capacity of the disk image is now the same as the capacity of the source volume rather then just enough space to accommodate the files that will be copied
    • Resolved issues with installing the Authentication Credentials installer package from multiple source machines on a single target machine
    • Adjusted permissions of the archival folders so that admin users can modify their contents
    • Adjusted permissions of target disk image so that admin users can mount it read-write
    • Resolved an issue in which scheduled tasks would not run upon reboot (Leopard only)
    • Resolved an issue in which a backup using the "Copy everything from source to target" method would fail soon after erasing the target volume
    • CCC no longer allows the scheduling of tasks that erase the target volume
    • Fixed a regression in which the "invisible" flag is not preserved when performing a backup with the "Copy everything" method (Leopard only)
    • CCC no longer errantly warns the user that specifying "/" as the path on a remote source volume will overwrite the boot volume
    • Resolved an issue in which specifying a path with a space in it would cause CCC to back up to the wrong location on a remote Macintosh, potentially resulting in data loss
