"This is easy to use if adjustments are needed at seams"
Version: Canon Utilities PhotoStitch 3.1.6.8
Pros
Relatively fast to arrange photos if they are at least close to meeting stitch criteria: even lighting, 30% overlap, etc. MOV output option to render to QuickTime permitting end-user interaction a BIG plus; Beter, easier seam adjustment tools give predictable results.
Cons
No individual adjustments per frame for individual lighting variations. Not really "free" as it is bundled with many Canon digital cameras since maybe 2006 or so, so really, you need to have a Canon camera to use it with. Interface is a bit outdated - I don't think the pkg has been updated much for years - could be wrong - I use an old version. Unless series is shot well, produces a lot of loss at top & bottom hence long, narrow result after cropping the junk off.
Summary
Provides good adjustments at seams for frames that don't match up exactly. QT/MOV output a BIG plus. Works good for series if shot with care. Lacks lighting adjustments per frame. No perspective adjustments. Plan on doing a bit of retouching on end result. Plan on losing a lot at top and bottom after cropping because stitching produces white space at top & bottom unless you shot series perfectly. I used it. It'smy fav free pano s/w.

"Great for photos, poor for scans"
Version: Canon Utilities PhotoStitch 3.1.6.8
Pros
I have had excellent results using Canon Photostitch 3.1.21.45 to combine photos taken with wide angle lenses. This would seem to be a difficult task due to the distortion introduced by the wide angle lens, but most of the time it works with no flaws
Cons
I have had poor results with scanned documents which include text. In fact, it does not work. Text is not combined properly and always has shadows or offsets. For items like maps or graphics with text, forget it.
Summary
This has been great for photos. Nearly useless for scans.
Also, it seems like you have to save the combined image before you can view it at full resolution. -

"Very, very bad"
Version: Canon Utilities PhotoStitch 3.1.6.8
Pros
Really none
Cons
Very bad at merging photos
Summary
Couldn't photo-stitch 6 photos taken with EOS 450D correctly. It seems that I have a photo that is too close to another (a move of about 1/5 of the size of the photo) for the software to work correctly. If I don't use that photo, the software merges the pictures very unseamlessly (namely at the merge where I had to take one photo away). Besides, the sky goes from darkish blue to white, but the software should have corrected the panorama so as to make the sky homogeneous.
Autopano Pro is a lot better in handling the two issues I've referred.
