"Lousy Capture"
Version: CamStudio 2.6b
Pros
It's quick and easy to use, plus it's free.
Cons
The playback is lousy, the screen stutters and the color distorts like crazy. I tried different settings and it's still bad. This used to be a good product. What happened?
Summary
Just another story in the long line of good products gone bad. What once was a cool software, is now crap. I'm sorry to say this because I really like this software and used it a lot. Not anymore. Bummer.

"Great capture software."
Version: CamStudio 2.6b
Pros
Easy to use. Does an excellent capture job.
Cons
Ver 2.6b is buggy on WinXP. [Ver2.0 works perfectly]
Summary
CamStudio is easy to use. Very versatile in that it can capture any screen size or portion. The capture is the same quality as the source input.
Ver2.0 works very well on WinXP. I tried ver2.6b and found it to be buggy so I stay with 2.0. I can't comment on other Win versions.
I noted the editors review about not being able to save to any and every format, edit video and so forth. That's not the purpose of this software. If you want to do full editing on whatever you capture VirtualDub is the tool to do that. Cloudy Video Converter will convert the file to any and all formats if that's what you want to do. Avi format will play on PC and home DVD players so that's all I need.
One of the things that gives users problems (that's not the fault of CamStudio) is encoding errors. For a number of codecs, the picture width has to be a multiple of 4 and the height a multiple of 2. Otherwise, you end up with an error message of corrupt file. So, after selecting the window in CamStudio, you need to check and adjust the width and height boxes manually at the bottom of the "select" window. You simply enter it. No need to do the window over. If the width is 430 for example, you have to change it to 428 or 432. If the height is 221, you have to change it to 220 or 222. Remember to do that and your videos will come out perfectly.
Overall, great piece of totally free software. -
"Didn't work for me"
Version: CamStudio 2.6b
Pros
Seems like a nice little program.
Cons
My video was in grayscale and slanted when I tried to select only part of my screen to capture.

"Good and whatnot."

Cons

Summary
Its good as long as you don't get a stupid green flashing screen.

"CamStudio20 Review"
Version: CamStudio 2.6b
Pros
Easy to use from the first, audio okay, video looked okay too.
Cons
Caused Bryce7 pro to freeze halfway through the animation/video, and then caused the PC to freeze and the screen to constantly flash green light - this obliterated all progs running including the Task Manager when I tried to close CamStudio via that.
Summary
I hope the newer version is better - I can't use version 2. Will download 2.6 now.
There's no change with version 2.6 - it still crashes, so it's not useable. Which is a real pity because right up until it crashes it works beautifully. But if it crashes before you've said what you wanted to say, right in the middle of a sentence, before you've been able to demonstrate anything at all - it's just plain useless.

If it ever gets fixed, I would like to know, but until then I'll just have to forget it. Sorry. -
"nice options, flexible, works!, FREE"
Version: CamStudio 2.6b
Pros
Has options for audio and video recording styles, you can drag size or type in a size, set the frame rate, and output to flash movie if you want. You can even put in annotations.
Cons
maybe just that you can't choose a better audio output format
Summary
I used version 2.0 and 2.5 and they worked great. Haven't actually tried 2.6, which I am downloading now.
