Editors' Review

Calibre provides all the elements you need to organize and manage an e-book collection. With a simple set of tools and a helpful layout, this program is a nice choice for any electronic reading lover.

The program's interface is a snap to understand because of its professionally designed layout and easy-to-use command icons. Calibre lets you open a variety of e-book types and read them. You download your e-books from your desktop or hard drive directly into Calibre. The entire process is so simple that we never felt the need to consult the Help file. You can easily sort your titles by alphabetical order, cover image, or tags. We especially like being able to customize tags and covers, which is handy if the book doesn't come with any. While all these functions worked well, the program didn't feel like an essential utility until we tried out its special features, which elevate Calibre from a mere reader into an e-book manager. The conversion feature converts any e-book's file type with a few clicks, which we like because some handheld readers only accept specific file types. The uploading feature lets you send your e-books directly to one of those handheld readers or other portable device with equal ease. Calibre covered every base, from downloading and cataloging our electronic book collection to putting the words in the palm of our hand.

Calibre is freeware. It installs desktop icons without permission. We loved its simple operation and impressive results, and we recommend this program.

"A Nook saver!"

September 18, 2010  |  By Melissk

 |  Version: Calibre 0.7.19

Ease of use and relatively intuitive to get started using. I was extremely frustrated in getting non-B&N books sideloaded to Nook - some would show up, others wouldn't. Ran them through Calibre, and the problem was solved.

Calibre frequently updates the software, fixing any bugs that crop up in its many features, and expanding the file formats and devices it supports. Oh. Wait. I guess that isn't a 'con'!

B&N told me to install Adobe Digital Editions to get the non-B&N files I downloaded to sideload to Nook that were persistently not showing up on the Nook. I read about Calibre, installed it, and got it working immediately. I found that when I had Calibre "convert" the epub files that wouldn't sideload to epub (yes, that's right: epub to epub), Calibre cleaned up whatever coding or behind-the-scene formatting problems that Nook wasn't able to resolve, and all of the files sideloaded successfully. Now, when I have epub and pdf files I want to sideload, I just run Calibre's conversion on all of them (epub or pdf to epub), then sideload them.

I also use Calibre to remove books I've read off of the Nook. The problem with this is that Calibre will delete them out of Calibre's directory in C\Programs. That's not a problem for me as I keep the original downloaded files organized in My eBooks, so I can do my remote backups.

Note that Calibre can't do conversions on DRMd files, just those in the pubic domain or which otherwise do not have an embedded DRM.
