Editors' Review

An all-in-one solution for handling your e-books, Calibre does for electronic books just what iTunes does for music, allowing you to manage your digital book collection through an intuitive albeit overcrowded interface while offering excellent support for converting books to different formats and editing their metadata. The only area where the software is lacking is its e-book reader; it doesn't allow you to highlight or add notes to your books.

Pros

E-book converter: With Calibre you can take an e-book in one file format and convert it to another that is supported by your e-book reading device and, if you're not happy with the result, you can tweak the conversion settings and even manually edit the book's contents and formatting. It took us four seconds to convert a 40-page e-book from PDF to ePub.

E-book reader: The software comes with a basic e-book reader that supports fullscreen mode for distraction-free reading and that lets you choose your preferred method of pagination and gives you the ability to bookmark pages. Unfortunately, there is no way to annotate, highlight, or augment the book's contents short of editing the book itself.

E-book organizer: Similar to iTunes, the app is much more than an e-book reader: it acts also as your e-book library, providing a central place where you can organize and sort your collection and allowing you to edit the book's metadata and even pull information automatically from places like Google and Amazon. On the back-end, each author gets his or her own folder and each e-book gets its own subfolder, which contains all versions of the given book along with its metadata.

Cons

Crowded interface: There is a lot going on when you start using the app; just on the main screen there are three search fields and 15 buttons, many of which come with drop-down menus. Fortunately, primary functions are thoughtfully placed where you would expect them to be, so the learning curve is not too steep.

Bottom Line

If you're a serious e-book fan and read on more than one device, you should definitely give Calibre a try. Using this open-source software, you can have all the different versions of your books together in one library while keeping the actual files neatly organized in intelligently named folders.

"Locked my system up completely!"

November 14, 2015  |  By Jim Harmon

2015-11-14 07:05:14  |  By Jim Harmon

 |  Version: Calibre 2.44

Pros

It installs quickly

Cons

It doesn't do anything.

Summary

I have a Win 8.1 i7 system with 12 GB RAM.

When I installed the program and clicked "Finish" (with the "Run Calibre" option checked), my system locked up so badly I had to power it down. After it rebooted, I clicked on the desktop icon. Once again, the system locked up and had to be powered down.

"Fantastic library management app."

November 03, 2015  |  By Gizmologistic

2015-11-03 13:30:16  |  By Gizmologistic

 |  Version: Calibre 2.42

Pros

Converts pretty much anything to anything and does it quickly. Is compatible with almost every popular reader on the market. Frequent updates and improvements

Cons

Probably does more than you need but seriously is that REALLY a con?

Summary

This app is SO useful and it SHOULD get donations as it doesn't rely on adware to generate bucks for it's developer.

"Good idea, but real problems in implementation"

March 11, 2015  |  By BillSamuel

2015-03-11 07:31:52  |  By BillSamuel

 |  Version: Calibre 2.20

Pros

It allows conversion of e-books from one format to another.
It's free.

Cons

It does a very poor job of converting in many cases. For example, converting from epub format to mobi format to use on Kindle produces a document with the content but it doesn't preserve the formatting so it is not much like the original except in content.

Summary

Needs real improvement. TIP: if you want to convert an e-book for use on Kindle, convert it to PDF as this works well, rather than to mobi since the conversion there is very poor.

"Program deletes files without warning"

July 28, 2014  |  By NCSympa

2014-07-28 08:41:58  |  By NCSympa

 |  Version: Calibre 1.46

Pros

Organizes documents

Cons

Cumbersome way to organize files putting each one in separate folder. The most serious problem is that the program may automatically delete your document without warning. Later when you try to access the document, you discover it no longer exists. I have had this program delete documents multiple times. It does not give you the option of a warning but just does it. This is a very significant problem and users need to be aware of it.

"Crashed for the 6th time"

April 24, 2014  |  By pjh1398

2014-04-24 00:47:33  |  By pjh1398

 |  Version: Calibre 1.33

Pros

The management tool is fantastic. I like the fact you can customize the plug-ins for this allowing you to modify the program to best use. It makes modifying the Metadata very easy as well as renaming and tagging files. The library feature is very nice because you can set up various libraries to hold books. For example I have a Fiction, Non Fiction, as well as a few others making it easy to organize. I also modified it to let me put Genre on it instead of using the tags

Cons

It crashed AGAIN. The only program I have that crashes more is Adobe Digital Reader. Every 3rd or 4th time I modify a file, it locks up and I have to use Alt/Ctrl/delete to get out of it. It has severe emotional problems when I add a larger ebook selection to it as well as when I move ebooks. At least it doesn't crash when I do that, yet. It wants to be too many things therefore it hogs resources. I can't run anything else when I run something like conversion. Frankly I get sick of staring at the program struggling to process the conversion for minutes on end. 15 minutes is my limit and I'll stop the program just to get out of it. When you ask a question, you get 'Calibre' speak which, I'm sorry, normal humans don't want to deal with. We just want the program to work. It sounds more like hedging than answers. Lots of new gadgets, lots of features but nothing needed for a good management system.

Summary

It's no longer fast, easy and fun. The program is trying to be everything to everyone instead of what it should be, a simple management program with an attached ereader. It is the only choice at the moment so you are stuck with it if you want to do intensive management and convert files easily. If I was offered a good alternative, I would even pay for the alternative just so I wouldn't have to deal with Calibre's problems. If you have a life and don't want to learn Calibre speak, it isn't the program for you.

"Is NOT a reader. Only organizes."

March 02, 2014  |  By ScurvyMcRickets

2014-03-02 20:41:16  |  By ScurvyMcRickets

 |  Version: Calibre 1.26

Pros

None so far. I keep all of my files organized. Well I guess it's cool that you see the book covers.

Cons

Only downloaded this because I thought it was a reader, but it's not. If it was a reader and I didn't have to download a separate program to actually open my books it would be great. As it is, it's like iTunes with out a music player. just a program to keep everything organized...which is what file directories are for. No need to make a book playlist.

Summary

Think iTunes if iTunes didn't play music. It's just a library and it can sync to other devices.
