"1.3.9 is out and you know where to get the binary.."

October 13, 2008  |  By A. Nony Mouse

 |  Version: CUPS 1.3.8

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
The poor ratings are unfounded. If you don't know what your doing then you shouldn't be fiddling around with this stuff. That doesn't mean it shouldn't be made available. If you're not a mechanic do you try to do your own transmission overhauls? Well not knowing how to recover from a CUPS problem and certainly not having the patience to learn how to help yourself is kind of the same thing. Don't mess with it if you're scared by it but don't let your feelings take from CUPS. Its not the problem, or Apple wouldn't have invested & continue development it as they do.

So after all that this new version has some good stuff. Look here for the changes:

"Do Not Enter"

Summary

This makes the QuickTime 7.5 screw up look like a candy store.

This should not even be on a public site like this. It should be on the CUPS site ONLY with a big red WARNING, for programmers and mega Geeks ONLY, all others stay away.

Danger Will Robinson, Danger

Run Willow Run.

Run Forest Run

All kidding aside. You will need to do a fresh install of your system, or have a fresh bootable clone on your slave drive using SuperDuper in smart mode, back up all files, just in case an Apple update or anything else kills your Mac. ALWAYS have a fresh backup, or your life on your Mac can turn ugly fast. It took 3 major screw ups over the years for me to wise up. One was an early version of Carbon Copy Cloner. I also have an external back up hard drive. Not going to get me again.

"Q: So why should you be SCARED of a CUPS update?"

February 20, 2008  |  By zunipus

 |  Version: CUPS 1.3.6

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
A: Because Apple didn't augment it to work with Mac OS X.

I figured providing something a bit more descriptive than 'run away' might be helpful for inquiring minds.

Simply installing an update of CUPS into Mac OS X, as described in previous posts, will DAMAGE your ability to print in Mac OS X. CUPS is NOT simply a drop-in program for any version of Mac OS X. Apple have to toss in coding of their own to make CUPS work properly for the Mac platform.

So, if you don't know exactly what to do with a CUPS update, just leave the thing alone. Do not read the documentation and get some vague idea that installing the update into Mac OS X might actually do something useful. It won't. Expect the absolute worst, specifically having to reinstall your version of Mac OS X from scratch. There are lots of Open Source apps you can easily update into Mac OS X. This ain't one of them, no way, no how.

Suggestion: Instead go read about, download and install the latest stable version of Gutenprint for Mac OS X. It's not going to hurt anything.

"Another Failure"

 |  Version: CUPS 1.2.11

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Knocked out my new Kodak AiO printer, and seems to cause the menus of different drivers to "blend" together and cause multiple computer malfunctions and crashes. On top of that, there is no uninstaller! The read me in the installer says your OS must be reinstalled! Dangerous stuff!

"Watch out!"

 |  Version: CUPS 1.2.10

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I agree with the previous poster. I recently tried the last update from CUPS, and it effectively disabled all printing capabilities on my computer. I had to do a system reinstall and re-download all the extras I had added on to the system.
Only install this if you are absolutely sure that it will work!
CUPS people, please test your updates before releasing them, or at least label them dev versions.
