"Great app to edit CSS from an online address."

April 08, 2011  |  By misspato

 |  Version: CSSEdit 2.6.1

Pros

Allows you to edit and preview CSS from an online site without having to upload the CSS.

Cons

The X-Ray funcionality (firebug-like) could be improved.

Summary

I use it always for my CSS work. It allows me to work without having to upload the CSS all the time. I recommend it.

"Nice but Dead"

June 04, 2009  |  By damage00

 |  Version: CSSEdit 2.6

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I used to use this almost daily but it was one of those things I begrudged. It's like 90% there but the final few bugs that need fixing make it infuriating to use. For instance, after you save your work, you need to "override and edit" each CSS file in order to work in CSSEdit again. It's very much like closing and reopening CSSEdit after every save, which makes for an awkward workflow.

The developer hasn't released any updates since 2007 (shortly after my purchase) and doesn't respond to emails. I waited two months after emailing before posting this.

Frankly, I don't like the idea of someone who will take money then drop support for the product. S/he should start providing updates, make the code open source or give refunds.

Unfortunately, I have recommended CSSEdit in the past to people who bought it but I can't any longer and now suggest a text editor, like TextMate, which is what I use now.

"Good stuff, a little unstable"

July 29, 2007  |  By wenintheus

 |  Version: CSSEdit 2.5.1

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This is one of those apps that doesn't do a lot, but what it does, it does really well.

As its name implies, it focuses on editing CSS. Kudos to the developers for focusing solely on that, rather than trying to throw on a bunch of other stuff. Other reviews here have mentioned their favorite features. Mine is the innovative use of annotations in the style sheet to organize related styles. For example, the sample "welcome.css" style sheet that they provide contains the following:
/* @group Override Banner */
Anything underneath that annotation is organized in the navigator pallete underneath a "Override Banner" heading.

The app has crashed on me a few times, but not so much as to be a major problem. Hopefully those issues will be ironed out.

"Application that's worth every penny!"

I remembered requesting for a feature a while back after getting my copy, and awaiting for the update. I am pleasantly surprise to see that the feature is in this update and a LOT more! CSSEdit RULES! I'll pass on Dreamweaver, this is WAY better!

"Significant update! Nice!"

I really like the "selector builder" Well done. Tabs are a welcomed feature that make working with multiple style sheets much easier.

The only things that I'm left wishing for is a "live update" feature. Let me explain: If I'm working on a page in Dreamweaver CS3 and I update the style sheet with that program AND I already have the style sheet open in CSSEdit, CSSEdit doesn't update the style sheet once Dreamweaver makes the changes. I also use TextMate, and this program does update any modified documents. With CSSEdit, I need to close and reopen the document for those changes to show up.

Having said that, I do appreciate this fine program and highly recommend it to anyone who spends time with style sheets. Well done!

This program is brilliant. I'm glad I discovered (and subsequently purchased) it during my CSS infancy. It certainly helped with the learning curve and I love the preview mode.

"Seriously great"

This app is a joy, especially v2. I use it every single working day and as a professional web developer it makes every CSS thing I do a pleasure. As an ex-Dreamweaver power user all I can say is... time to move on, ditch DW and get CSSEdit and TextMate. You'll never look back.

Can't believe this is only $30. Buy a Mac for this :)

"Good but could be better"

March 31, 2006  |  By norliss

 |  Version: CSSEdit 1.7.2

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.

I tried this for a short while alongside Westciv's "Style Master" and ended up opting for this because it was a bit leaner and I preferred the UI.

Generally, it's a good app. I like the overall layout and useability and live preview window (though this has a few bugs). The groups feature is certainly a great idea.

It could do with a few things, some of which mentioned elsewhere, such as:

  • Some missing CSS2.1 & 3 features
  • In-built validation
  • Line-numbering
although I'm sure these will come in time.

I have found a few quirks and some instability though which really need to be sorted. Perhaps most disappointing is the support: I've sent a couple of e-mails, both of which have gone unanswered.

Overall, a worthy app which hopefully will continue to be developed, but users wanting a bit more comprehensive tool might look at Style Master.
