CNET TechTracker User Reviews

"Not completely to rely on"
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.1
Pros
I like to be reminded that there are new versions of app, but I am always suspicious whether to download. Best of all is the users review with exact remarks.
Cons
Sometimes shows duplicates or results were false positives. If I use a free version, it is not clear enough that the new is a trial or to-buy.

"easy to use"
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.1
Pros
easy to use
Cons
shows duplicates
Summary
still a great tool to use

"Works for Me"
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.1
Pros
What Microsoft/Windows Update does for Microsoft products, this does for many others.
While I think it might be done a bit better, it certainly does help a lot, by keeping the amount of time chasing down updates to a minimum.Cons
Really, I'm not sure there are any. Except that I find the actual interface a bit of a kludge; at times, it is difficult to understand what point has been reached, in an update progress.
Summary
It's much better than all the time needed to find out if your apps are up to date. And certainly much better than firing up a utility, or app, then seeing a "you can update this now" or "this app is ready to be updated" and given a now, or later, option.
Certainly, when a person wants to use something, they do not want to stop and update that something.
The Tech Tracker helps avoid that untimely interruption. -
"Not reliable and does not cover all rivers"
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.1
Pros
Works with stuff it "can do things for" [drivers] but does not do updates on all applications.
Cons
Does not do updates on all applications.
Summary
Useless ... what's the point in only getting "some" of your stuff tracked ?

"I had to review it - should have done before"
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.1
Pros
Download App made me do this
Cnet TechTracker has been a very good updater - it worked effectively but not 100%. You could control apps/update ignores via account online and once setup it was functionalCons
Over the years it's failed to scan a few times
Over the years it's ahd one or two error update notifications
I use it inline with filehippo because each miss other software
Nothing is perfect in this world but it worked.Summary
keep Cnet TechTracker - uninstall/block/avoid Download App
There are other better options if Cnet TechTracker goes but that means missing out on all the other benefits/knowledge of Cnet -
"Better Than Download App"
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.1
Pros
Better scanner than Download App
Cons
Could be more accurate
-
"there are better alternatives"
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.1
Pros
-large data base
-did work on windows 7, kinda (see cons), plus seemed a little glitchy.Cons
-results were false positives
-could not select one update individually to update (would have to do them all, which I did not want - cuz It wanted to update windows live software, which is not installed but comes with operating system)
-I eventually hit update, and nothing happened - so it doesn't work.Summary
not ready for use. use something else. file hippo, sumo, or update notifier are better.
ex. of false positive - i use kingsoft writer and this updater said i have an update, but the update was not for the writer, it was for the office suite. close, but no cigar. or as mentioned, windows 7 comes with windows live software installers (but not installed). it wants to update these, even though i haven't installed them (though, this is a common problem with some of its competitors).

"Does Download App replace Tech Tracker?"
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.1
Pros
I have always liked Tech Tracker, but it seems Download App does the same thing in a more high teck manner.
Cons
I have observed none.
Summary
Do I need both Download App and Tech Tracker???

"Scans and takes care of most updates but Not all"
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.1
Pros
Runs mostly in the background and notifies successfully of the major of updates.
Cons
Does not scan for all updates.
Also it fails to recognize updated software all the time. I've had the tracker say something needed to be updated, even though it was completely up to date. Also the smart install doesn't always work. -
"did not work with windows 8"
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.1
Pros
i found no pros
Cons
tried more than once, no to windows 8
