Publisher's Description
From CBS Interactive:
CNET TechTracker is a free application from CNET that helps keep the software on your computer up-to-date and secure. TechTracker works by scanning your computer and alerting you when updates are available. Keeping software up-to-date is important because updates often contain patches that make your computer more secure and new features that make your software better.
TechTracker leverages the CNET Downloads software catalog--the largest catalog of software in the world--to provide secure, spyware-free software updates. From one easy-to-use interface, you can keep track of all software updates in one place and ensure you are running the latest versions.
Get the latest software updates: Learn whether any of the software installed on your computer is up-to-date. If updates are available, TechTracker lets you download them from a central interface. Get notified as new updates become available.
Customize how often TechTracker looks for updates: Choose between daily, weekly, monthly, and manual scans of your computer to discover whether you are running out-of-date software.
Hide & Skip applications: Hide applications you are not interested in tracking, or skip a version of an application until the next update is available.
Receive email alerts: Stay informed by receiving e-mail alerts when new updates are available for the products you are most interested in.
Access product information: Your CNET TechTracker home page shows you what software is installed on your machine, and lets you download any available updates from a single interface. View your software update's file information, installed version, latest version, average user rating, editor's rating, and other software data.
To go beyond software updates, upgrade to CNET TechTracker Plus. Click here to learn more.

"Useless junk."
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.0.2
Pros
Can't think of any.
Cons
Doesn't do anything more than provide you with the number of things that need updating - you still have to go to the (awful) website to figure out what actually is out of date. And there isn't an uninstaller for when you want to get rid of it.
Summary
If you want something more like VersionTracker Pro used to be, check out MacUpdate and avoid this program.

"It finds software nicely but to get an update is a pain"
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.0.2
Pros
Nice detection of software
Cons
Update process doesn't work well.
Summary
I have the plus version but it is a pain to use as it hasn't updated any of the software I have.
-
"Didn't work"
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.0.2
Pros
There are no pros.
Cons
Didn't work properly and when it did work (almost) it caused problems. I had to do a restore after getting rid of it.
Summary
Poor app, one to stay away from.

"Where is the Free?"
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.0.2
Pros
None, None, None
Cons
I was to get it free as this email states, but I have received neither free.

"Gets Worse on each update"
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.0.2
Pros
good Idea - fails to work
Cons
doesnt work, installs copies of updates (99 of them) for apps you dont even have (imovie 9 for example), doesnt put updates in same place, doesnt recognised when files updated
Summary
DO NOT install, versionTracker was great - this is useless. support non existent. IVE deleted it now..
sticking to buying programs via AppStore and letting apple update them PROPERLY -
"It sucks. Bring back Version Tracker!"
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.0.2
Pros
As far as I can tell, there are no "pros".
Cons
Intrusive and irritating. Can't tell which items have updates without opening a browser. I haven't been able to figure out how to tell it to hide/skip updates.
Summary
I would give this product =zero= stars if I could.
I've reduced the autochecking cycle to monthly to cut down on the annoyance factor and am trying to figure out a different method of ensuring that my software is current. -
"Doesn't do what it's supposed to!"
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.0.2
Pros
Clean interface, unobtrusive.
Cons
Several applications were up to date, but TechTracker doesn't recognize this. It doesn't direct me to the correct update.
This app is also impossible to uninstall. CNET instructions for uninstalling don't work either.Summary
Don't waste your time with this app.
-
"Often says software needs updates when it does not."
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.0.2
Pros
Found a lot of outdated software on my Mac and downloaded the updates more conveniently than going to all the web sites.
Cons
- Often installed programs in the wrong place or said update was needed when the advertised version was already installed.
- Keeps asking you to review anything you have updated, long before you have a chance to try the new version.Summary
Can be useful, but not nearly as clever as it should be.
-
"Not up to my expectation coming from CNET!"
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.0.2
Pros
Easily downloaded and ready to run!
Cons
After deciding TechTracker was not for me, I found that it was not possible to uninstall. The uninstall program was not found. Instructions from CNET were ineffective. Tech help proved to be no help at all.
Summary
I have had viruses easier to deal with than this program. Look elsewhere for a more user friendly app.
I'm a MAC guy. Maybe it's better on a PC! -
"Good program but spammy"
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.0.2
Pros
Comprehensively tracks programs that have updates available.
Cons
On my 3rd set of requests for upgrade reviews. Some programs I haven't even used eg Easus Partition. If I don't review in two requests, I'm probably not going to .
Summary
Ease up on the emails.
