Publisher's Description
From CBS Interactive:
CNET TechTracker is a free application from CNET that helps keep the software on your computer up-to-date and secure. TechTracker works by scanning your computer and alerting you when updates are available. Keeping software up-to-date is important because updates often contain patches that make your computer more secure and new features that make your software better.
TechTracker leverages the CNET Downloads software catalog--the largest catalog of software in the world--to provide secure, spyware-free software updates. From one easy-to-use interface, you can keep track of all software updates in one place and ensure you are running the latest versions.
Get the latest software updates: Learn whether any of the software installed on your computer is up-to-date. If updates are available, TechTracker lets you download them from a central interface. Get notified as new updates become available.
Customize how often TechTracker looks for updates: Choose between daily, weekly, monthly, and manual scans of your computer to discover whether you are running out-of-date software.
Hide & Skip applications: Hide applications you are not interested in tracking, or skip a version of an application until the next update is available.
Receive email alerts: Stay informed by receiving e-mail alerts when new updates are available for the products you are most interested in.
Access product information: Your CNET TechTracker home page shows you what software is installed on your machine, and lets you download any available updates from a single interface. View your software update's file information, installed version, latest version, average user rating, editor's rating, and other software data.
To go beyond software updates, upgrade to CNET TechTracker Plus. Click here to learn more.

"YECCH-TRACKER"
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.0
Pros
None I could find
Cons
This was totally worthless. It looks like just a front to get you to buy the Plus version.
Yechtracker erroneously indicated much of my software was out of date when it actually was current. Even the links to the so called updated software were bad.Summary
CNET should be ashamed to offer such a sham.

"Found it Worthless"
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.0
Pros
None I could find
Cons
ID's software I do not have or a version higher than my current. Have to opt out of email on every piece of software
Summary
Waste of time

"Continuous crashes after installing 2.0"
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.0
Pros
The older, 1.x version was quite helpful
Cons
After installation of 2.0, it began crashing repeatedly (every 30 seconds I got a crash report). Luckily I know how to stop this sort of thing...
Summary
If they fix the crash, it is a worthwhile product.

"Bad instructions"
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.0
Pros
Generally, it keeps me up to date. Of course, it requires the cooperation of the software publisher to work properly, and that doesn't always happen. I just have to remember which ones, so I don't bother updating them.
Cons
The tracker says "To go to your CNET TechTracker home page...click on 'Open TechTracker page.'" Apparently, nobody noticed that they took that button away. Just how do I get to my TechTracker page?
Summary
Not perfect, but better than nothing.
New version, new problem. "Scan" button doesn't work.

"Not playing nice with Mac 10.6.6"
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.0
Pros
Used to work with 10.6.5
Cons
No longer working with 10.6.6
Summary
Spend a couple bucks and get a LOT more functionality with MacKeeper.

"So what's the Plus?"
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.0
Pros
None except if you pay for it, you get MacPilot, but I already had paid for that. I can find no "plus" after "upgrading."
Cons
Slow interface, awkward to use for downloading software updates and terribly S-L-O-W email -only customer support.
Summary
I used VersionTracker for many years. Then along comes CJNET which buys it and proceeds to destroy it and finally discontinue it and replace it with TechTracker. Scanning my computer's software for updates kept reporting updates that I had set to ignore or hide. Even one application that I did not have on my computer kept popping up. CJNET could not figure out how to resolve the issue and eventually stopped trying.
I paid for the upgrade to Plus thinking that the "Plus" would be that the thing works. WRONG. I have been trying to two weeks since buying it to get it to work, but their customer service consists only of a response after about one week. The process is so confusing that the support people get lost in the process. CJNET is all about marketing and could care less about customer dissatisfaction.
Don't waste your money on TechTracker Plus. It works no better than TechTracker. -
"It seems to be working fine, I do get the notifications"
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.0
Pros
I think sometimes it works too well, I receive these requests for review from l lot of application developers.
Cons
Do you people actual read these reviews? Is there some way to make these reviews shorter, they are very time consuming!
Summary
Every time these application developers make a little change, they kick out another request (demand) for a review. Are these developers so unsure of the changes they make that they plague their clients with review requests. You must have a lab or techs to test this stuff!
-
"Needs to be more specific and customizable."
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.0
Pros
More thorough than Software Update
Cons
Suggests updates that are already installed. Suggests updates for versions of apps that have not been upgraded. The self-download of 2.0 did not execute. Suggests updates that are not required, recommended, or available from the software provider.
Summary
You would think that an app like this would at least be able to update itself. Makes you wonder if the other suggestions and recommendations are correct.
-
"Not very accurate."
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.0
Pros
When TechTracker correctly flags an out of date application the update process is very easy.
Cons
Continually flags up to date programs as out of date. I have on many occasions reported the incorrect flagging and nothing has been done to correct the error.
Summary
Don't waste your money on the paid version. Use MacUpdate it is more accurate.

"Don't buy TechTrackerPlus. Just a waste of money!"
Version: CNET TechTracker 2.0
Pros
I can't find any.
Cons
I find a lot of them. Crashes the formerly so nice CNET Download page on my else so nice and reliable Firefox, etc, etc.
Summary
Only creates a lot of problems without any benefits at all. Stay away from TechtrackerPlus and for that matter from the formerly very nice CNET download page. I really hope the good folks at CNET fix the problem. I am now using MacUpdate and it works without a flaw. Very reliable and flexible.
