"Not pretty, but neither was the disc"
Version: CD Recovery Toolbox Free 1.1.18
Pros
Simple interface, common sense save path.
Cons
Doesn't multitask well, with part of the interface disappearing after alt tabbing so that no progress indication could be seen from that point.
Summary
I had three large zip files on a DVD that windows couldn't access. CD Recovery Toolbox slowly but surely recovered two of the three files. It is a good first step before looking to physically rejuvenate a disc surface. Some extra code allowing the user to designate a cut-off point would be good. I left this running overnight and it was still running, with the third file only about 0.5% done (irrecoverable clearly). Having said that, progress is not linear so run this with nothing else in the background and when you don't need to use your pc and it may still get there in the end.

"Worked great for me"
Version: CD Recovery Toolbox Free 1.1.18
Pros
A while back I burned some mp3 files to CD to make room on my boot disk. Now that I've added a hard drive, so I wanted to copy them back. Something was fubar with my burn to CD though, because although my computer could 'see' the files on the CD, they could not be copied to my HD, nor would they 'play' when I clicked on one. This tool got MOST of the files off.
I think some reviewers expect too much. I mean, if your computer won't 'load' the CD (ie: so you can see the file structure in Windows Explorer), how can you expect this tool to read it.Cons
There should be an option to 'Skip' a file automatically after some user defined time has passed with no bytes read from the file.
Summary
If you have a CD that your PC can 'see', but you can't copy the files from the CD to your HD using 'normal' methods, there is a chance this tool COULD do it. I got about 1/3 of my files off. And I must admit that I 'skipped' any file after the 'read bar' didn't move for 30 seconds. So I suspect if I was more patient, I would have gotten more of my files.

"unsafe, stay far away"
Version: CD Recovery Toolbox Free 1.1.18
Pros
none none none
Cons
Program installs AVG toolbox software without your consent.
By default the program installs AVG software. The program appears to provide you the option of not installing the software, but if you select the option to NOT install AVG software it is installed anyways without your consent.
The AVG software provides NO way for it to be uninstalled. Windows uninstall does NOT work. There is no option in Firefox to remove the AVG addon. When AVG support is contacted they say you must install more AVG software in order to remove the AVG software. After installing more AVG software you will find that the uninstall does not work.Summary
unsafe software, stay far away,
recommend doing a complete virus scan of your computer if you install this software by mistake to check for virus and tojans. -
"Worked Great!"
Version: CD Recovery Toolbox Free 1.1.18
Pros
Simple, staightfoward. Recovered a (older) Program CD that I had chipped/cracked very slightly, but enough not to be workable any longer. Downloaded, Ran, was prompted for the damaged CD, inserted, and away it went! Was able to recover with no problem or hangups. Those who complain it took too long to complete; well, I have no complaints; it was Free, it worked - I just let it do it's thing and yes, hours later, it was finished, but I had a working Program CD for the wait!
Cons
None for me

"Worthless Product"
Version: CD Recovery Toolbox Free 1.1.18
Pros
Quick uninstall
Cons
Did not even recognize a CD in the drive. All it stated was, "Load CD."
Summary
The CD I was trying to recover only had a couple of very, minor scratches. This product is not worth trying if it cannot even detect a CD in the drive.

"Yay, it worked! Sort of."
Version: CD Recovery Toolbox Free 1.1.18
Pros
Damaged CD kept failing during installation of a program. I was able to extract the damaged file from the disc
Cons
Didn't recover the file completely.
Summary
I have a very old game that you can't get any more, and the installation failed every time because of the damaged disc. I was able to extract the files to my disc drive and get the game installed, but the installer reported one of the files didn't match what it was supposed to be.
It looks like it was just a game texture, so I don't think it will cause any problems. Maybe that texture just looks screwed up in-game. It's possible I could replace the textures anyways. -
