Everything about this program is wonderful, even the cute little icon. I couldn't imagine using OS X without it.

    "You don't know how much....."

    Summary

I always love seeing a new version of butler on VT. There are a few bugs lately (especially with butler not updating my applicationfolders, and thus not showing them in the abbrevviation-window), but that seem to have been ironed out. Beautifull piece of software.... plug-ins? For developers? That would be great... I remember I had a small calendar in Butler... maybe an old thing from Another Launcher.... I can't find it anymore in the latest Butlers...

    "SORRY GUYS..."

    June 1, 2004  |   By artie505

    Version: Butler 4.0b11

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This is addressed to loadedmind and smcaulay:

I've been using Butler since the Another Launcher days, and with the exception of the learning curve and documentation comments both of your reviews are problematic...

Butler launches in 10-15 seconds when I start my 700Mhz/640Mb RAM/10.3.3 iBook from being shut down; Command-space launches the abbreviation window near instantaneously; Sa shows Safari at the top of my list from where it can be set to be default; Etc., etc., and so forth.

I'd advise reviewing your settings and/or redownloading Butler.

Contacting Peter Maurer who is exceedingly helpful and, generally, pretty prompt with his response (He's been devoting his time to the Butler user manual lately and has been slower than usual, so please give him a break.) regarding your specific problems would also be to your best advantage as he is very sharp at picking up on the root causes of problems.

I'd also suggest that you save your reviews until Peter has either failed to respond or failed to be helpful.

Butler is one hell of a piece of work and once you've got it figured out you'll marvel at its functionality.

    "AnotherLauncher seemed much faster"

    May 6, 2004  |   By loadedmind

    Version: Butler 4.0b11

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I really want to give this product 5 stars, but I can't do it. After Butler takes 3-5 minutes to load (whether I tell it to startup on boot or manually afterwards), there are times when I attempt to bring up the quick-type prompt and it takes 30 seconds to 2 minutes to open up. Before, when the program was called AnotherLauncher, everything was immediate. AND, the place to type allowed you to continue typing if the program didn't populate in the list. Butler will remove the typed text if you stop typing for 2-5 seconds and start you over. Quite annoying. I couldn't say enough good things about AnotherLauncher. Butler definitely disappointed after much customization to attempt to get it to work more efficiently, i.e. Repair Permissions, tweaking portions of the program's preferences, etc. Specs for machine Butler is running on are as follows:

    G4 933 2MB L3 cache
    640MB RAM
    IBM HDD 57.27 GB

Perhaps either the higher revision or post-beta version will fix these glitches or perhaps it's just my machine. I don't have problems with any other programs/apps I run so... Lots of potential though.. I still recommend the product despite its shortcomings.

Even though I have bought both DragThing and Synergy, both good at what they do, I'm now considering replacing both of them by Butler.

Although the learning curve is a bit steep at first, Butler is an excellent, flexible, capable, fast application.

    "Wonderful!!"

    April 25, 2004  |   By SPDAY

    Version: Butler 4.0b11

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I was thinking of purchasing YouControl until a poster referred me to Butler. It is wonderful, as others have noted. Anyone noticing issues with CPU usage, however? My meter was running rather high, and came down after I quit Butler. Perhaps it's something else, because a Activity Monitor check did not reveal anything out of the ordinary. Automatic start-up at login also slowed boot up time considerably so I just click on Butler when needed. James......

    Thanks.

I sent an email to Peter a short time ago regarding the Comments field issue and he kept his promise to add this to a future release (this one, it appears). What a swell dude! Worthy of the donation I sent in for this extremely versatile program. BTW, the search field feature and the move items feature are my favorites.

I just updated from Another Launcher. This WAS fantastic, now it's indispensable. the addition of the multiple clipboards is done beautifully, and I love the full customization of the pop up windows. Bravo on a superb application, at a very reasonable price - whatever you want to pay for it.
