Editors' Review

Adding an unparalleled amount of functionality to your desktop, Butler is a file and application launcher, a bookmark manager, a Web-search utility, and a clipboard enhancer. The program adds several items to the menu bar, including an Internet search field, a shortcut to your computer's file system, and a bar that manages bookmarks from every browser you use. We liked the configurable keyboard shortcuts, which make launching files or Web sites a snap. Without a doubt, Butler is the most comprehensive launcher and desktop helper we've seen. Unfortunately, this is both a blessing and a curse, as the app's large number of features can seem overwhelming. As a result, we recommend Butler to advanced and midlevel users, though newbies should proceed with caution.

"Awesome Work!"

January 07, 2007  |  By astrochess

 |  Version: Butler 4.1.2

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've been using Butler for over a year now, and I am very impressed with it. This is the best piece of third-party freeware I've ever used, bar none. The interface is incredibly cohesive, intuitive, elegant, and Apple-like. Whenever I talk about Mac freeware, Butler is almost certain to be mentioned as the best of the best.

But Butler isn't just a nice collection of eye candy. MacWorld gave it the rare five-mice rating because of its perfect combination of usefulness, ease of use, and versatility. Using multiple clipboards, controlling iTunes, replaying keystrokes, searching the net, and controlling the system can all be done with Butler via keyboard shortcut, hot corners, the menu bar, or the Butler docklet.

I am using Butler on my PowerMac G5 dual 2Ghz with 10.3.9. So far, Butler has never stalled or crashed my system.

I wanted a clipboard manager and Butler seemed to be the best around. Now I have it I have learned to love the other features especially the search bar. Great to customise it to search where I want it.
The ease of opening applications and files is great, not to mention having access to bookmarks in all my browsers. And to think it is initially free - I had to donate!

I have used Butler for more than two years now, and each new version has added more great functionality. You have to spend a little time customising the program to really suit your need, which then really makes it indispensable. A must have program for every macs.

Butler is the best companion utility for the Mac. It's among the first things I install after a Mac OS set up.

Using a Mac without Butler is a pain.

Everyone, except the previous poster, knows what a delight Butler is. My review is largely to correct the one start mistake.

It works as advertised, and makes your life simpler.

"Butler is the ultimate time and effort saving desktop enhancement program ever."

July 09, 2006  |  By GeekMaster

 |  Version: Butler 4.1.2

Pros

Butler is the ultimate functionality enhancing program that I have ever seen. It gives you access to so many resourceful sites on the web. It basically gives you access to every program and command on your computer. That means that Butler can do anything a person could do without it but quicker and easier.

What's new in version 4.1.2
  • Aliases are resolved less aggressively now. For instance, Butler won't try to mount remote volumes while updating its abbreviations cache anymore.
  • Fixed a bug where Butler's abbreviations matching mechanism failed on file names that contained non-ASCII characters (a.k.a. the "Hägar" bug).
  • Fixed a bug where duplicating containers via [option]-drag would cause Butler to reference the same contents twice.
  • Butler starts up faster now.
  • Available languages: English, French, German, Japanese -- potential localizers might want to have a look at Butler Help's "Localizations" section.
